Q: Do foreigners own anything really big in China without Chinese partners?

If anyone knows the stories of Modern Plaza or Ji Yuan Mall in Hadian you will know why I ask this question.  It seems whenever a foreign company makes it really big in China, they get taken over by Chinese companies who basically say, we take 51% or see to it that your business licenses and visas are not renewed next year.  In the case of JiYuan mall the local Chinese guy was murdered in the parking garage.  At Modern plaza the Japanese owners who invested $20 million to build the store were passively deported.  Look what happened to Yahoo and Jack Ma (Ali-Pay scandal)

Even smaller businesses like Kro's Nest Pizza, and Muffy's Kindergarten had coerced "cooperation". Is this capitalism at it finest or what?

If you think that is capitalism then you know absolutely nothing. That is government sponsored thievery and thuggery.

There are some industries where it is not allowed to establish a company without partnering up. For example automotive. I am sure that the Volkswagen groups owns billions worth of manufacturing facilities in China, but the gubbermint owns a similar share of it.

You will probably only find smaller factories making and exporting simple plastic crap, dog food or some other low tech products that are set up as WFOEs.
