Q: Do the guitar shops in Shanghai have good fakes?

I'm going to move to Shanghai in a few months and would love to play guitar, however I don't want to bring any of my own over because they're pretty expensive and I don't want them to get damaged. I wouldn't mind getting a nice hollowbody, are there any shops which carry good fakes for cheap?  What kind of price range would I be looking at?

A good fake one could be around 1000 kuai at the guitar shop!

That sounds reasonable, have you tried one before? Is there much range in guitars I can look at?

I never visited Shanghai but I imagine you could guitar shop all week and then some if you wanted to. I habitually guitar shop in my 1st tier city because I'm bored. Like mattaya said you could find a decent hollow body (ie Gibson ES335 copy) for 1,000 RMB or more. You could spend as little as 700 but don't get too cheap unless you prefer high action.

Haha thats great!  I'm more concerned about how the guitar plays - pickups can always be replaced but I don't want anything with a dodgy neck etc. Although I play Fenders in Australia I don't care about the brands etc as long as it plays well

Edit: Yeah I definitely want low action, I guess I'll just play around... Could/will be very fun :) Do you have any suggestions amp-wise? I don't mind a solid state but I'd love a valve but something very low wattage and cheap, dont want to be too loud but I would love great sound... Once again brand does not bother me, I'm more about sound/playability than anything

I also would like a low watt tube amp but ...

Decide what you like, search it on taobao and then call or visit Shanghai stores. Someone will have it. Marshall, Vox etc. are available but not cheap.

In my experience low action is hard to find. I hope you do better. The cheapest low action I found was 4,000 RMB. Seriously I hope you find a good axe and I think Shanghai is a good place to shop.

Also, you might need to look around for hollow bodies but you can find them from cheap players to sweet and expensive. Go to shops and keep asking.

I tried a few HBs priced from 1200 to 2800 and I liked them, but your tastes may be (read: certainly are) more refined than mine as so far I only play solid bodies.

In China I sometimes found the cheaper guitar may have a better setup than a more expensive model.  You know; fret buzz, tone, etc. In China you need to play them to find the right one, but hell that's fun.
