Q: Do I need to leave China to renew my Z visa?

With all the new regulations on visas, do I need to leave China to renew my Z visa? I'll be working for the same company, same city, same position.

your company should be able to take care of this. You will be without your passport for a while and won't be able to travel.

Your Z visa expired 30 days after you entered China, and your residence permit took over and does work as a visa, even if is only a pemit.  Go to you local PSB no less than 5 days prior to expiration and request renewal.  If I were you, would go even earlier to find out documentation need for renewal in your case in particular..  Takes about 5 working days to process, cost will depend on your nationality.

Liufenxue:

I'm sorry. I might have worded my question in the wrong way. I need to extend my residence permit and just wanted to make sure I won't have to leave China. I never know what to expect and I've been told it 's getting more and more difficult to get a visa. So I was wondering, since I've been legally working in China, if extending my residence permit would be "painful" or not.

It will not be "painful" if you have all required documents, and do it on time.  PSB normally accepts requests from Monday to Thursday, and Fridays are only to return documents.  Request new one no less than 5 days prior to expiraton, make sure you have the certification of address registration issued by local Police Station and you will have no problems.

I was in the same situation a few months ago. I did not have to leave China... but the colleague in charge of my case told me I was lucky to avoid the "Hong-Kong maneuver"

If you're already working for a company, then you shouldn't have a Z visa, you should have already converted it to a Resident Permit. If you did then yes your company can renew it for you.

As long as your residence permit didn't expire you can renew without leaving the country.

is it same for Teachers

Hotwater:

It's the same for any non-Chinese working here. You get one Z-visa, the first time you come to work in China legally. Then, as long as you don't leave China between jobs you only ever need to update/change your FEC/Work Permit and Residence visa. this is done within China by the company that you work for.
