Q: Do international companies in China also suffer from guanxi?

One of my Chinese friends got into a really good UK firm here in Beijing, that's apparently very competitive. She got in through guanxi, which somewhat contradicts my question. But... everyone on her first day was shocked and confessed to her openly it was almost a miracle she got in, given her education wasn't tailored specifically to that field. They wondered if she had guanxi with the regional director here in China, which she doesn't (just below that).

So is guanxi a lot less prevalent in international firms based in China, or is it just as bad?

is it guanxi or headhunted for the position?

I have worked for big companies and managers and bosses bring in people from outside who know who will get the job done that is headhunted.

Guanxi is a favour some form of bribe either money or extravagant gifts.

To me sounds like she was headhunted into the position.

Heard a lot about guanxi lately as if it's something the Chinese invented, but isn't it just a universal practice; you scratch my back, case of whiskey, fraternity brothers and secret handshakes? It happens everywhere doesn't it?

The big international company I worked for in China had these problems, because they had the Chinese managers do the hiring.

When they found out, they changed the process so there was a foreigner "helping" the Chinese managers throughout the hiring.
