Perhaps the question is do many Chinese people not have health insurance. I know a woman whose daughter was ill and she has taken an extra job to pay for it. Is health insurance available if you don't have a job? or do people just have to hope that they don't get sick?

If you have a government job, you have some insurance. Private employers most often insure employees, but many say they will, but actually don't.
These insurances are basic and only cover treatment in peoples local hospital with domestic drugs.
The last couple of years there have been a boom in private people buying insurance themselves. These are a lot more expensive, but gives you the freedom to chose the treatment you want. Usually these insurances include retirement funds.

gee I would think Commie = Socialist = free medical for all ?

nah, China is all about not getting anything for your tax money.
But maybe you can enlighten me. A while ago I heard some obscene number for how many Chinese nationals also have Canadian health care. It was in the millions and to me sounded like something that could bankrupt Canada if ever they all went there with a fever asking for a saline drip.
