Q: Do most teachers here go back home for Christmas?
or are you not given leave around that time?
I asked for three weeks to go home around Christmas time and my school refused.

Christmas Day is commercially celebrated in China, but it is not an official holiday. So, it is a work day just like any other day. With New Lunar Year celebrations following one month afterwards, doubt seriously you will be granted a leave of absence so you can go home to celebrate Xmas there. You will get from 2 to 4 weeks off around January 20, go home then and celebrate a belated Xmas day
Not many teachers go home, most people know prior that it is the Chinese new year that is most important, not Christmas.
Three weeks is too long for a holiday that simply to them is a shopping day. I am sure you have got 1 or 2 days off, but obviously that's not worth the trip home.
Well, Christimas is not a natinal holiday in China and it is legitimate for school to refuse your request to leave as it is almost the end of semester in China.
No, we usually have to work on that day.
The good part is that when I do go home for the winter holiday, the flight tickets are cheaper than they would be in December.

It was only yesterday i was looking at flights for the end of january, to go home, and they are about the cheapest i have seen at any other time.
I now consider China home, I haven't been back to the UK since I got here almost 2 years ago, and tbh I have no intention of going back until we leave permanently in approximately 10 years time.
Two reasons, for that:
1. My parents are no longer with us.
2. Our house is rented out.
Reluctant to post after Hugh, as apparently 'where one posts, so posts the other.....ooh, boogi-boogi' but i've not been back to England in a couple of years. Did visit for Christmas though and it snowed and everything. Marvelous. Also in the area of the country I was staying (Lincolnshire) it has become popular to deck your whole house out on the outside, in lights and decorations. This i'd never seen before in England. Also pretty marvelous. It's the one time of year I really miss home.
