I like living in Beijing, but it really bums me out that there are 10 foot tall walls all over the place. When I'm walking somewhere, its like there is no scenery to look at. It also bugs me that there are fences everywhere, so that if you want to, say, walk into a university or community, you cannot simply cross the street and go in, you have to find one of a limited number of gated entrances. My question is, are all Chinese cities like this, or is this something unique to Beijing?
No Chinese city I was before has walls. Some fences......yes! But, no walls.
Tangshan, Harbin, Jiamusi, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Jixian, Yingkou, and now I am in Dalian, and there are no walls anywhere around.
While I walk, I can get to mostly 'natural' obstacles as highways, bridges, but no walls.
There is fence at my apartment building. I live in one of the 4 apartment building with 30 floors each. There is fence around all 4 buildings, with two entrance doors.
derek:
Harbin has as many fences as any other city. More than I have ever seen in Canada. The campus I worked at had just two or three entrances, frustrating to say the least.

I was in Harbin in Oct 2010, less than 2 months in total, what is probably too short to be familiar with the city.
I lived close to new apartment buildings construction site. I don't know the name of the area, but there was no walls or fences anywhere. For fun, I was counting new apartments in that area with more than 100 different size apartment buildings in construction. I was able to walk all over the construction area.
I didn't see many fences or walls in downtown Harbin either.
Here in Zhuhai almost everything has a wall and a guard in a small "phonebooth" The walls around our community has cameras, motion sensors and shards of glass sticking up from the top of the walls. There is golf carts with guards driving the outer perimeter and guards walking inside at any time of day (the golf cart guards do also seem to go on a lot of baozi runs too )
From my apartment I have an excellent view of a couple of construction areas, the walls go up last.
