Q: Do schools do a background check on foreign teachers here?

Or can previously convicted sex offenders in the West just come here teaching little kids and continuing abusing innocent children?

Felon's can get passports like anyone else (at least in the US) unless they have committed an act of treason.  It is the responsibility of the visa issuing country to require a background check.  However, to my knowledge, none do.

I have heard of some schools requiring a criminal report from a persons home country (Basically, it is a document that says you have/haven't committed any serious crimes issued by the person's home country police department.)  But that request is really rare.

So the sad truth, is that yes a pedophile could pretty easily get a job teaching children in most any country where the employer doesn't require a background check.

Tapwater:

I had a discussion almost exactly like this with a Chinese coworker, and they believed that every teacher we hired had been given a criminal background check. But I know that I didn't sign a release like that.

So then she claimed that you can't get a Chinese Visa at all if you have a criminal record in America, but I wonder if China can access those records without your permission. It seems doubtful to me.
