Q: Do taxi drivers in Guangzhou feel all foreigners are stupid?

In the last few days I have used quite a few taxis around Guangzhou on my R & R leave for one week.  One thing I have found out here is that maybe taxi drives feel all foreigners do not know how to add or subtract.   Everyone of them has given me the change back when I pay the fare from 4 to 10 Rmb short.  And also taking the longer route instead of the direct one.  But at least with me, as soon as I realize that I am given a tour instead of a taxi drive, I tell my GF and she has fun with the driver.

And now, prior to  when I exit the taxi, I ask for a receipt, and make a show of counting the money given as change.   As I said, every one was short trying to earn a few more yuan.  At least, in Nanning they always will give you the correct change.

So, if you ever visit Guangzhou, keep this in mind, and polish your Math tables.

Is that a common occurrence where you live too ?

Never happened to me before. I actually got a ride cheaper once because the taxi driver didn't have any small money. Hey it wasn't my fault so we both agreed that it was his fault and not mine to bring the correct change so I got a discount. I was in sales and marketing so I know how to cut deals with people! broken heart

Mr_spoon:

Or he switched your bill for a fake one, and you got screwed like a female dog.

I once thought I paid a taxi only 6 kuai on a 30 kuai distance. Little did I know...

dear  HappyExPat,
after reading your question, i feel so funny!
i think you are right, and what happened to you is also normal here, the majority of the drivers in Guangzhou are like that. besides, there are also some advices for those who will take taxi in Guangzhou.
the yellow and red taxi drivers are mostly native. they seldom ask many questions until you ask, which i like !
the green taxi drivers are mostly from hu nan and he nan, normally they ask thousands of questions when you sit inside the taxi. also,be careful with them, one time i put one box guitar parts in the back of taxi, and when i was about to take out the box, the driver ran ....(it is a long story! ) later the policeman told me, be careful with the green taxies...
so...wish you have a better trip next time in Guangzhou!

HappyExPat:

Maybe his is why I like China so much, life is not a bore here.  Something exciting is happening each day, and must be on guard most of the time to avoid getting ripped off.

And Emily's information is a good one to know, I will avoid green taxies in Guangzhou from now on.  Thanks dear !
