Q: Do the Yanks even know who Xi Jinping is? How many of them know, or care, he's in America?
Three questions.
My feeling is his trip is more of a publicity stunt put on for the Chinese people who are in need of ever more imaginative diversions.
CCTV is tonight reporting they'll be crossing live to the US when his plane touches down in Seattle. Hope they've got some brolleys on hand for that one.
How big is this trip in the eyes of the Americans?
while in Seattle, Xi will be given the names, addresses, occupations, phone #'s etc. of many of the efficient hackers in China, so he can deal with them appropriately and promptly, in a manner consistent with the American Dream with Chinese characteristics.
In Washington he will teach Obama a little about gun control , as well as terrorist and minority extinction, with Chinese characteristics.
Climate change and environmental protection will be discussed. They will both raise taxes on cigarettes, Cuban cigars and increase fines for backyard fires and BBQ's. A statement will be released acknowledging these as great cooperative steps forward in these challenging times.
Preliminary talks on the TOLL Charges for shipping routes and fly zones in and over the South China sea will be put on the table. Obama will agree to look at them.
It's a big deal because the republicans can use this as China Bashing.

The thing is, Obumer had to get some spiritual help from Papal first.
That's the only leverage US could pull out. US mainstream press treats Xi's visit as a 'not that important' event, and Papa's visit being the top event.
More interesting than Xi's visit is '2000 Russians landed in Syria accompanied by the latest military tech gear as support to Assad'.

As an American, I can say that the majority of Americans couldn't pronounce, let alone know who he is (This can be said of almost ALL leaders of nations). My opinion is that if the visit is on the news alot, many will simply see it as a sort of 'holiday'...much like when Obama goes on his golf forays, or when Michelle goes to visit somewhere with a massive entourage at taxpayers expense...

These 2 leaders are very committed to being honest and compassionate leaders of their nations and of the world. They know very well the potentials for catastrophe.
The difficulties are enormous and solutions are at best improbable for generations to come.
Children are being trained as killers, warriors... generations and generations of warriors already exist in the middle east. and of course NK.
USA and China will get along and will do their best to save the planet, and humanity.... GOOD LUCK!! ........... I actually believe Russia has stepped to the front of the ISIS battle and will certainly be a leader in their demise. USA go home!! Assad is nothing.

People are much more interested in the Pope, who is also visiting.
He's playing second fiddle to the Pope which is funny because they've been taking down crosses here lately. Goes to America and is upstaged by the Pope.
-I'm wondering if the Obama administration is using the pope to distract the American public from the Xi visit. After all one man is a international symbol of holiness, mercy, and forgiveness, and the other is a symbol of tyranny, torture, and darkness.

Just curious, you did mean the Pope for the first one - yes?? And, by "the Pope", you're referring only to the current one...
As others have said the Pope is getting more press here now. Plus, I think Xi and Obama probably don't want to make a lot of noise about the visit to the American media because of the TPP which Obama would just as soon avoid a public conversation about. Xi likely isn't in favor of it as it kind of ices China out while firming up US relations with a lot of China's regional rivals. That said, Xi isn't going to make an appeal to the American public on the matter, like Bibi did over the Iran Deal, because China's opposition to it is the only thing that could swing public opinion on the TPP from ignorance to support.
