Q: Do you always have to peel fruit and veg here because of toxic pesticides?

Read some freightening stuff on greenpeace's website about Tesco's fresh produce containing toxic pesticides that cause cancer and infertility and are even banned by Chinese authorities because they are so toxic.

Just eat it... if you wanted to live forever you wouldn't be in China in the first place.

The pesticides also likely go in through the root system of the plant so... Peel away, it won't do much good... DaBen is right, if you're health conscious you're in the wrong country... May I suggest a Scandinavian country perhaps?

Lolitta2:

I agree that living in China isn't the ideal choice for someone who's ultra health conscious but I find the "take it or leave it approach" to answering that question quite worrisome. Sure, this country has many food safety issues, but at the very least we should be voicing our concerns about them, the way I have with this question, otherwise what message are you trying to send: "Just bow your head and don't even question any of the wrongs that you see"? How can any country progress if everyone adapted such an attitude? I'm concerned about food safety, I live in China and I'm not afraid to voice my concerns...carpe diem!

I always wash my fruits and veggies before eat them. That's pretty much the best you can do, unless you avoid stuff that can't be peeled. Don't worry too much about the food. If you do, you'll never eat anything.

y8321cn:

I do it in this way: If there dosn't seem to have wax coating on the fruit, washing is enough. if there is, peel is necessary.

"Don't worry too much about the food. If you do, you'll never eat anything." - Now that's a sound piece of advice...NOT.

Always wash them well and vary your diet. The pesticides in the food will not hurt you. They will only affect you after years and years of consumption. They will build up slowly in your body and in tiny quantities.

I'd be more worried about the radioactive particles that are present in the veggies around the Beijing - Shanghai area, after the nuclear incident they had in Japan. Not to worry, though, these particles also wash off, but you need to clean them extremely well. Especially Spinach and other vegetables that have micro follicles that trap the radiation from the air.

Good luck washing the green out of your salad Smile

You're in the wrong country to wonder about if what you eat is safe or not.....

All fruits and vegetables produced in China are produced in fields where they use the normal water you have at home, which is not drinkable and contains metals.

The problem is not washing the fruits and vegetables in itself. The problem is that when you wash too much either fruits or vegetables, then you also wash away the vitamins. The same when you peel them as vitamins are often present in the layer between the skin and the fruit itself.
