I drink a lot more cheaper stuff here. Back home is enjoy just a couple of good beers and a few fingers of a nice whiskey for an average night after work. Now my average night is cheaper crap that I'm sure is destroying my liver as if I was drinking five times as much. How cheap it is to get some wolfberry wine or jin jiu to drink at night..

Too easy.
Too cheap.
Out of sheer boredom.

I drink significantly more in China. For me, there are two separate reasons behind this. First, when I'm on my own it helps pass the time faster (and after a day of work in China I have a lot more free time than I would in the west) and alleviates boredom. Secondly, when I"m with foreign friends it's a common activity that we can all take part in and enjoy. Foreigners often bond more quickly in China than they might in their home country, because of the ability to identify with other non-natives, one way to spend time with them is drinking.
It is also very true that alcohol is often very cheap and more widely available in China than in other countries, although the selection may be more limited than at home.

I found that since I've become increasingly more fluent in Mandarin, I don't drink nearly as much. I sometimes "look back" on the other foreigners - the ones still sitting in the familiar expat bars that cater to their disadvantages, who complain and have no desire to be unmuted in a country of 1.4 billion - and I can't help but feel anxious for them.

My drinking is down. Drank weekly at home with my friends, drink monthly here. I think it's mostly that there's no one to drink with. Sometimes drinking in an expat bar is fun, but I can't handle that more than once a month (expats can be unbearable too, hard to believe I know Wink ). Hangovers seem worse here, maybe cuz the quality of booze is worse.

Drinking for me is a social lubricant, and since there's no one to interact with, there's less need to drink.
