Q: Do you ever have location related VPN issues?

When I am in a hotel my VPN works fine trouble free.

At the factory it always crashes and even when on I still get blocked from certain sites (random crap).

At home after a couple of weeks of moving in the same thing happens!

Do the censors grant more leniency for places like hotels with allot of foreigners?

And WTF with the random sites they block??  IMDb...I mean really...this site is really a freakin threat????????????

I just wanna read the NYT in peace please!

Does your VPN performance also depend on location?

I haven't come across that in different locations but random stoppages yes. I also believe that the NYT is under heavy blocking (assuming a site can be blocked more than others). The other consideration is: What ISP is being used at work, your apartment and the hotel. Different ISP's have different levels of censorship by the GFW. And that might be the answer to your problem.

I think my windows laptop sometimes needs to have it's dns cache flushed to work trouble free. A mix of being on different networks, using different VPN connection points etc. But generally I think all is well.

Note. I think the Chinese sensors recognize that IMDB.com's ratings suck and they want the people to get the more balanced, or harmonious, ratings of rottentomatoes.com (from memory I think IMDB got blocked as there was a discussion on the site that somehow was relating to Tibet)

A mate of mine hooked me up with a VPN on my phone.  Works flawlessly in my apartment yet never in my office.  I'm too much of a Luddite to have an iota of a clue why this is

one of the head assholes in china was exposed in a new york times piece as being worth 2.7 billion dollars through family trusts , miltary projects built etc. so china has them blocked , did the same thing to bloomberg , never cared for the nyt but i miss the stock reports on bloomberg. ive never found a vpn that consistently gives me no problems. just a headache .

Hey I had asked a similar question a couple months back when I was out in Tianjin

http://answers.echinacities.com/question/it-guys-out-there-vpn-problems-...

As they said, there seems to be multiple levels of censors and they range between cities and even within the city itself so it is location based somewhat. I'm pretty sure IMBD and NYT are censored across the nation, but when I was at my girlfriend's house, the place had censored reddit and imgur...dark times...dark times

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
