Q: Do you ever talk politics with local people here?

Maybe it's just me but people here seem oblivious to what the rest of the world knows is happening right now.

Maybe they are feigning stupid or really have no clue because they don't care or have been reading the People's Daily too much..

Anyone had an argument with a local that tried to tell you how wonderful everything in China is and refused to listen to an argument  that contradicted their views...regarless of facts?

Nah, I generally worked with some tuned in ones. A few of them were down right dissidents. Made for interesting talk.

i don't even like to talk politics with others in my own country. Especially when their ideas and theories are based on Fox News and other misconstrued facts.

GuilinRaf:

In terms of credibility I truly see no difference between CNN or Fox News. Both have their "agendas". The quality of the reports will generally be better in CNN however.

I don't watch any of the news channels. I prefer BBC. Unfortunately, you get biased viewpoints no matter where you turn nowadays, so you have to sift through all of it, get all sides, and yes, make up your own mind.

Yeah I do! I talk about it with my students. And it is interesting to hear them share their views. However, with the older generation, the response is varied. And you even have to be careful what you say.

My students are all aware of the consequence of saying too much or if they say it to the wrong person.

I made this mistake a couple nights ago.  Was watching TV with a friend, and then the news comes on talking about the little situation with the Philippines.  When I made her a graphical representation using my hands to show the proximity of the island in question to the Philippines (IE, far away from China), she immediately and almost instinctively went for the 5000 year history card.  I LOL'd to her face....poor girl.

I love it when my English Corner students start a political conversation, knowing full well that they will "win" because I'm not allowed to say anything that would contradict them. So I silently sit while they scream slogans at me and congratulate themselves on spiritually defeating all foreign countries through me, who they seem to consider a UN plenipotentiary..

My favourite part about Chinese culture is how they think that by cheating, they've just scored a more clever victory.

GuilinRaf:

The few times they have brought up politics in English corner, I warn them to change the subject or I will walk away. When they ignore me, I walk away. No need to hear their slogans.

Because of my job, it's an everyday thing and it's usually with lower level to mid level government officials that begin to cite the things they here on CCTV 9, propaganda news English Channel. The only thing they will admit to is that the world is against them but there is nothing they really can do because the military power is 20 to 30 years above China's weapons and training techniques therefore other countries always brings the US and England into the picture for protection

I do get into some political stuff at our English corner, but always at a low level and always point out that nowhere is perfect. There does seem to be a mix of opinion ranging from the idiot who always wants to dominate every ones discussion by introducing politics and telling me how bad everything in China is and how wonderful everything in the West is. Of course when I point out to him it isn't exactly like that I am in the wrong despite having lived there for 57 years and he hasn't been outside of China at all. Some of the the younger people of university age or a little older are the ones who seem to be genuinely interested and more accepting that everything in the West is not perfect. It is pretty rare to find anyone though that can have a genuinely informed viewpoint, either on the outside world or of China itself. Most political discussions dry up when they discover that things are not as they would percieve them to be outside of China. Most people here are pretty niave.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your passport ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
