Q: Do you feel that you are starving in China?

I mean; how does Chinese food affect your eating habit?

Starving?  For how cheap you can buy good fresh food.  The only time I feel like I'm starving is when I have a day off and the idea of staying in a warm bed all day sounds better than getting out in the cold (but even then, I prepare the day before and have snacks and a few choice drinks within reach).

Sorry...I gained 4kgs in one year here....when I figured it would be the opposite.  I eat more in China because so much of it is just so damn good.

In the past, when I just came to visit, each visit was a weight gain of as much as 10 kilos.  Now that I live here, it is very hard to control my food intake to avoid weigth gain.

STARVING ?.  No way, Jose !.  On the contrary, it is the other way around !.  Food here is too good, and soooooooooo cheap, I must really wear off my self control.

Where else I can have a bowl of fried noodles, or a dumplings soup with an OJ for 6 yuan ?  That's just under ONE DOLLAR !.

Come on..........,  AWAKE  TO REA:ITY HERE !

I actually dropped about 15kg since coming here.  Mostly because I eat a lot more veggies and can't have pizza delivered to my home at the click of a mouse.

The food here is good once you open your mind and throw away your fears of trying something new.

I weigh about the same. My rule of thumb is to eat when I'm hungry, and that usually means I don't really gain or lose weight. I don't eat as healthy here, so that might change things, but only a little.

I agree with many of the posters above.  Food is relatively inexpensive here and in the provincial city where I live, there are thriving street markets that sell farm-fresh produce -- fruits and vegetables and fresh, hot steaming tofu -- from sunrise until sunset.  Food is a very minor component of my budget.  Starving?  In China?  Not in my city anyway.

I just cant eat this food here... ive tried on the streets up to the best hotels..... There is NO hygine at all here , do yourself a favour, go into the chitchen where you eat and see what they doing and buying for you to eat...3 years later, i give up.... ill go home soon....

Xpat.John:

That is your mistake. You looked behind the curtain. I think that if everyone in this country looked at how food is prepared here in comparison to the western world, they would all give up on eating.

I agree to a certain point. I don't know if you have ever worked in a restaurant, Fritze, but do you really think they throw away that chunk of meat that they dropped on the floor? Do all the employees in the West wash their hands after using the restroom? How about a sneezing cook? Ever see a waitress wipe her nose at the pick up station and then take the plates out to the customer? How about a dishwasher who doesn't really care if he puts sanitizing solution in the machine while he's doing the flatware and utensils. In other words, lack of hygiene is everywhere. Folks just hide it better in the western restaurants. While it may not be as bad as in China (due to governmental regulations and inspections), there are many instances where, on a personal basis, hygiene goes "out the window."

Please dont take this wrong.. but if you from the Uk you wont say this..... yea most likely USA.... (as ive seen Kitchen Nightmares, Hells kitchen.. ) The UK and some parts of Europe is so strict regarding hygine... yes they will reuse a dropped piece of meat.... but they dont cook heads feet and other gross things, much cleaner, cant use a chopping board for any kind of cutting.... They much more cleaner and i can eat in peace... here i cant specially the spitting all over even in a good restaurant..

ya everyday... for good food, but in general no u can't starve when you can get 8rmb rice combos.  But for good food ya i starve everyday.... all their food is drenched in pigs oil, MSG, you would think chinese food here would be the best? haha HELL NO!!  Being here this is just a few i crave for... JERK CHICKEN, FILET MIGNON, ROAST TURKEY, TURKEY stuffing, JUICY BURGER, FRIES & GRAVY, PEROGIES...

and dont even say the locals know how to eat here... most of their dishes requires soy sauce this or vinegar that... though they have some good dishes here, but still doesn't beat the variety back in North America...

Starving in China? No way. Too much good food at too low of a cost! Actually, I've gained some, and now have to excersise in order to keep it off, which is a good thing!
