Q: Do you find there's a lot of rivalry between expats in Beijing and Shanghai?
I don't think there's a major rivalry between expats, but there certainly is between Chinese. Beijingers and Shanghainese notoriously dispise each other, probably because they think their respective cities are better. I find there's a slightly different demographic of foreigners in Beijing and Shanghai. More students, hobos, artists and scruffy types live in Beijing and more white-collar, career-driven types live in Shanghai. But hey, I'm probably just completely stereotyping!
we all want to be king. we have been living here long enough for that to get in your heads so when u someone else being treated like a king its only natural for one to get jealous.

Again, these kings don't even know the language and got sick of Chinese food two weeks into the trip. The kings of the middle kingdom are the ones eating a McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner and still have to point at the pictures. Amazing.
I don't think it's only an "expat" thing, rather than a human thing.
I was looking for someone to help me with Mandarin and met a Chinese woman going to a local college. She has no Canadian friends here. The Chinese students stick together. It's comforting in a strange place to surround yourself with familar people.
I don't think Chinese recieve much discrimination in Canada. We have this preconcieved idea that all Chinese are smart and pleasant. But still they seem shy. So these are Chinese expats, same thing only different.

Maybe in Nunavut they have that reputation, but in Vancouver they are loathed as being rude and smelling funny.

except for a bit of staring I never found any rude Chinese or smelly. The women I liked I gave perfume to. They smelled great.
I ran into scammers but also people that helped me just to be nice.
