Q: Do you give money to the homeless here?

There are always so many, especially in areas with lots of foreigners. Do you give them money? Food? Bottles? Donate to a bigger fund or charity? Or do you just believe it is hopeless..

(This is not made to make anyone feel guilty, I am genuinely interested)

Back in my home country I give to the homeless/beggars that need it. Because Im from the same place as them, I can tell if its genuine n need the help, or if they are a cheat or just gonna use it on their vices.

But here I dont know, and I cant tell. So I dont. The locals know, and they can pitch in if they see fit

The vast majority of beggars here, including kids, old people, crippled and maim are parts  of organized gangs.  Many of the maim an crippled are made that way on purpose by the gangs so they can get more money while begging.  The gangs are even known to kidnap children and force them to be beggars.  When you give money to beggars in China you are most likely supporting these kinds of activities.

Only in the rarest of situations have I ever given money to any beggar.

i do, id give a kuai for them beggars or crippled. yes you can never tell if they're for real or not, but i still feel bad for them.

dandmcd:

Everyone feels bad for them certainly, especially the ones pressured into doing it by organized gangs, or the poor souls who were forced to have their legs or face deformed worse than it may have already been to make the disability seems even worse..  However, much, if not the majority of the money is going to someone else, the person begging is likely paid a small percentage to be a limp on the side of the street, and some criminal is cashing in the profits.

I never gave money to any of them. I felt bad about it, but I didn't know if they really needed the money or not. The same people were always out begging every night on the same streets, and sometimes there would be an occasional new one that wouldn't stay long.

I never give money to the beggars.

Once I tried to buy foods for two street kids as they approached to me saying they are hungry. I told them if they are really hungry then I could even feed them in a good restaurant if they are willing. They denied and repeatedly asked for money.

Then I took them to the nearest shop to buy some packed food. The seller told me that for these kinds of kids, I should open the pack before giving them, otherwise they will try to sell it back somewhere and get the money. I did open before giving it to them.

That was my first and last (so far) help for any street kids or beggars.

i do most times, there is one on the bridge between yashow and soho(sanlitun) he is badly burnt, dunno if he got eyes or not...cant really look at him.dint know about the gang arrangement but if that was done to him for that..its sick!! i could be foolish for giving them money but if he is gonna get a part of it then good...better than him returning to his 'laoban' without a dime and maimed further so he we can be pitied into gvn him money..or it could go the other way,he makes good money so maimed further to make more! either way i dont and wont try to over think it before giving when i can

I give money to buskers but rarely to beggers. Kids never because it only encourages organized begging, in fact i've spotted an adult who was directing kids to beg once and had a go at her. I once saw a bloke walk down the road then lie on his side and fake disability with his hand out. Shameless. But you have to look case by case, it's rediculous to assume that every person asking for help is part of an organized circuit of professional beggers, there are bound to be exceptions.

The overwhelming majority of people who beg for money are either fake and/or giving the money to some organized crime gang as somebody already stated...  Chances are, they make a lot more money everyday than you make in a week or even in a month.

I've been to New York City a lot, and the best advice I can give is the same advice my friend gave me..  If they really needed the money, they'd learn to sing or play an instrument.  People who are just out there begging for money while not working at all for it are just scammers / drug junkies / fakes and the best thing you can do for them is to NOT give them any money, or chances are they'll take your money and go overdose on some drug and get themselves killed and their blood will be on your hands..   I remember reading an article a while back about a Chinese guy who lost both his arms, but he still plays music with his feet and sings songs in public places for money...

Just my 2 cents, *NEVER* give money to people who beg but don't do anything to earn it.
