Q: Do you guys lift the bowl to eat rice?
This is really bugging me. I always thought it was alright to pick up the bowl.
But in my school cafeteria, I noticed that the majority of Chinese students leave the bowl on the table while they pick at the rice with their chopsticks. It just looks so painfully inefficient.
Is it a manners thing...or?
No, it's an ability to use 'quaize' well.
You're picking up the bowl, because if you won't, you'll drop half of the rice, before you'll stick it into your swallow, and Chinese mastered the matter LTA.
'Use quaize' practise lesson:
1. get bowl full of peanuts out of the shell;
2. try to grab as many peanuts with choppies as you can bring it into your mouth;
3. When you'll grab three peanuts and deliver it to your swallow without hesitation (or drop), you're 'graduated' to 'Master (MA) quaize user'
degree.
You should pay attention to difference between 'grab' and 'carry', 'cause 'carry' doesn't qualify in 'successful' quaize use, i.e. you can stick chopsticks together on the bottom and 'carrry' three or more nuts to your mouth. Not good! You must hold three nutters-side-by-side between chopsticks, and move it without dropping them ....
When I show that masterpiece (
) to Chinamen, all scream 'nue bie', what means 'awesome' in Englo. I'm usually not sober at my 'demo lesson'.
I practiced that by using two pencils and pick-up the 3rd pencil on the floor 10 years, before I wandered to China.
My Chinese name is 'nue bie', given by China-men.
'...there's a natural mistic flowing through the air....' and 'Ragganmore 12Y old' on rocks at my 'quiza' place.
The other thing is, Chinese will like you more, if you act stupid with their utensils.
However, 'I usually don't take prisoners ...', in other words 'if you play with me, you loose....' O2, o2

haha,,, I'm probably not the only one on here who has lived in SE Asia,,, I kinda liked sitting on the floor eating with my hands,,, using a banana tree leaf to pinch up a bit of rice, veggie, and a bite of meat. well, actually I liked that way a lot. I thought it was better than knife/fork or kuai zi.
in farmer town, the people put the bowl to their mouth (like drinking) and shovel the rice into their mouth.
Pretty stupid, why dont use a spoon??

For me I lift the bowl because I can get more in my mouth and not drop any of it.
very rarely, if that is needed then someone has given me shitty utensils and I will ask to have that fixed before resorting to pick up the bowl.
before I ever had anything to do with Asia, we used to say, as a warning to cocky employees .... "never piss in somebody else's rice bowl"
As was already said - it is a manner.
Basically many (but not all) people with good education in tier 1 or tier 2 cities will tell you you shall not lift your bowl as it makes the impression that you are too hungry and just want to gobble the meal.
But!
In many places irrespective of education people simple lift the rice for their comfort.
After all I decided for myself I do not care and lift the bowl.

Who would guess that such people would be able to use Internet freely - usually they are in closed hospital departments not to get disturbed by outside world which they fail to understand.
