Q: Do you have a list of banned shops?

Do you do this? Or am I alone in my pig headedness?

If I feel that the sevice isnt acceptable  or they are too stupid, I will refuse to go back.  This sounds very simple in a place that has countless  options and few " banned" places  ( like back home).  But here it is becoming a hassle.

If a smoke shop tells me " mei you" too many times, I will refuse to go back, and make a point of letting them see me at the shop next door.  Untill  they say meiyou 5 times, and then the next and the next.

My wife has a favorite noodle shop and I went when it was busy and they were scared to take an order from a foreigner so they just ignored me and  let me stand there while everyone else walked past me.  I havent been back since and now must drive to get her noodles ,whereas this place was across the street.

I have  quite litterally hundreds of  these places that I refuse to give my hard earned money, but now pretty much everything is a hassle.  Do you guys ever do this too , or do you just take the bullshit??? I refuse to go back now as I have told pretty much all of them that they are stupid &unts, but for the sake of my own sanity, I may need to cut the next guy a break.

There is also a smaller list of shops that have banned me.  Like the water delivery guy, who knocks on the door, then  if you dont answer  in exacty a second in a half, starts beating on it.

When I asked him how long he thinks it takes the average person to  get up and open a door and to please give me that much time before he kicks it down, still continued with it,  I ordered water, then stood behind the closed  door for 20 minutes  yelling

" im coming! just a sec! "

He didnt ever come back.......

And the food delivery guy who did the same.  Knocking on the door repeatedly untill it was answered without a pause, even if I said im coming.  So one time ( the last time)  I waited untill I heard him approach the door and before he could knock, i threw it open and jumped out at him.   He lost his mind, dropped all my food and never came back.

Anyways the point is, I can eat my  wifes cooking aaaaand thats about it in the area. Gotta drive about an hour to go anywhere else.

yeah, i do really the same, for same reasons

Nessquick:

Also, some of the veggie vendors in our wet market, has their shares.

First one I have ruled out, because when  I came first time, he rushed to serve me first insted of other customers, who was the earlier than me. They gave some looks, I refused, let he serve them first. but you know, smiles, laowai pengyou blah blah. one of the women turned away and I felt bad. And his veggies wasn't nothing special for me, so I banned him and went manytimes to his neighbour. but my wife like to shop there. it was funny when we come together. she shop there, me beside.

I have also discovered some tricks they do.

When you come 2nd or 3rd time (sometimes the 1st time, but rarely) they play a game. almost all of them. I have to pay 14rmb, and give them 20rmb note. they gave me back 16rmb and completely as normal nothing happen. I tell them back, you gave me more and giving him back his 10rmb note. they look in surprise with cold face, that "oohh, haha, xiexie" ... next several time visit are normal, everything fine and then they start to cheat you. because they made a good impression, and always friendly, so somehow you trust them a bit. they they go with old scams. trained person can find out. so, another ban devil You made few rmb by cheating me ? okay, never shop here again. does it help you ?

Pizza Hut is on my shit list. The only time I went there (my wife wanted to try), I somehow had high hopes about pizzas and Italian style noodles. They often have people queuing to go inside, right ? It was my first in any Pizza Hut ever.

It was disgusting... The carbonara sauce was so bad I had to condition myself to not puke.  How can you fail a carbonara sauce ?! Anyway, it was awfull and expensive, on top of being crowded and noisy as usual. A simple "hole in the wall" restaurant would have been much more enjoyable, healthier and cheaper. I don't know if it's *that* Pizza Hut (it was in Nanjing, the touristic district with Kong Zi temple nearby) or Pizza Hut in general, but yuck, never again.

I only have Pizza Huts pizza on the shit list. Their coffee is one of my favorites.

I know it's not always possible, but I try to avoid any places that don't offer tissue and TP. Like if you think that i'm so grimy that I would steal your fucking toilet paper (ideally) I don't have a fucking cent for you. And if you say it's the other customers that are a bunch of scummy TP thieves, then why do I want to eat at a place where scummy TP thieves hang out?

That's only possible when i'm playing with home field advantage though cause I know 95% of this country is like that. So sometimes I gotta suck it up.

Yes. A rapidly growing list.

But it is tricky to maintain a) because it is in my head b) because of the massive turnover in businesses.

I suppose I have a high threshold for bullshit, I haven't blacklisted a place for  a long time and even then it has probably only been about 3 or 4 places. I don't count not going back somewhere because they don't stock my beer or I don't like how narrow the aisles are or whatever.

When I have in the past though it has always been because they either tried to overcharge or shortchange me, or because I feel like they're trying to show off to their friends or whoever by mocking the laowai.

That was what happened the last time I blacklisted a place, ( I have since moved to a different neighborhood so don't shop there anymore). I had been going to a small shop near my apartment most nights on the way home for about a year and the people never said much to me other than grunting the price of the beer and whatever else I was buying. That's ok with me. I liked the idea of supporting the small business owner rather than the bigger and better market just down the street. One day though the owner was playing majong with a few friends when I went in, they were drinking and smoking and when they saw me they started talking shit at me behind my back and giggling like little girls. I placed my stuff on the floor, walked out, went to the bigger place and that's where I shopped after that. The owner used to glare at me like I had somehow wronged him when I walked past his shop every night.

I have to say though that most places I go to are fine. My expectations aren't high.I don't expect much in the way of service and don't get offended very easily.

Lord_hanson:

Snap, I rarely blacklist somewhere unless they try to rip me off or say something racist then I go somewhere else. There are lots of shops run by people who aren't a-holes.

I was barred from my local bar last week.

But no problem,  I was barred from the old bar because I had been seen drinking in the new bar.

So I still have a bar wink.

I am a communist at heart, but a capitalist when it suits me angel.

I go where the best beer is. Draught Tiger versus bottles of Tsingdao? At almost the same price !!

I don't shop in the nearest fruit shop to my accommodation after I refused to buy the rotten fruit the owner tried to sell to me.

I had picked out the fruit i wanted myself and handed it over to be weighed, only for the owner to try and substitute rotten fruit instead.

That woman must have thought i was an idiot and didn't see what she had done.

I refused to pay and kept pointing at the fruit i wanted which she had unsuccessfully tried to hide. She began hurling abuse and dragging other people into the whole thing so i just walked away.

NO-ONE tells me what to buy

I don't have a blacklist. Instead, I have a very short OK list.

I don't eat out much anymore, knowing it's either terrible crap or overpriced half-decent crap. I don't shop out much anymore, Internet gives me better guarantees at a better price. For alcohol, I go to HK.

Your reasons for blacklisting seem a little harsh, if I were to adopt the same standards i'd have to commute to buy groceries, but I do have a list. On it is the woman in the market who overcharged me, the woman in the tobacconists who tried to overcharge me and the motorcycle repairman who out an out ripped me off. I don't have any 'hard earned money' (I overcharge everyone), but i'm an Englishman! And thus a man of firm principles who will stand against injustice (just so long as it is not me committing it).

I do have a bar 'I' have been blacklisted from about three or four times, but that's not my fault, it's Jack's.

So far, only 3 places.

One is (was) a local Japanese restaurant attached to the fanciest "international" hotel in town.  Tried to go there during the Chinese valentine's day with the gf.  We had been going there pretty regularly before, so they knew us.  We had to wait forever for them to ready the table, but then were finally seated and placed our order.  Only to wait for the waitress to come back and tell us "Sorry, there is an order minimum of 500 rmb tonight, because of the holiday".  Holy f***, how are 2 people supposed to eat 500 rmb worth of food in place we normally only spend 200rmb and leave STUFFED?!  After some back and forth, it was apparent our patronage wasn't worth anything to them, so never went back.  Later they shut down, and now it's a Korean BBQ joint....still haven't been in there.

Second place is a "Supersteak" restaurant.  Not sure if it's a national chain or what....there's 2 here in Ningbo.  Of course, everything looks awesome on the menu, and even looked ok when it came out.  Nice thick cut, ordered medium.  Yeah...that was the chewiest, rawest, most gristle filled Chinese steak ever.  The service was ok...but that meat was just plain nasty.  I'd rather go to a little hole-the-wall place in town that serves a 30 rmb Taiwan style steak....at least it's palatable and doesn't turn my stomach in knots.

Third place is a KFC.  My little town has 3, but this particular one is filled with a bunch of sloven cunts.  Meiyou is the order of the day.  It can be because they don't actually have it, or because it's not prepared right just now, you get the Meiyou.  And if on some off-chance they do decide to get off their lazy arses and fry you up some french fries, they sure as hell ain't gonna bring them to you, because f*** having to get up and walk a few meters while carrying a damn tray.  The other 2 KFC's are fine, just a bit out of the way compared to the blacklisted one

mike695ca:

oooh KFC has it. They just dont want to prepare it.  I always want a two piece combo but getting actual chicken isnt possible.  After a few times i said screw I will wait.  How long??    The guy smirked at me and just made up a number. 40 minutes!!!!   I started a weibo campaign against KFC and they responded. And fixed it. After that I had chicken.  That one always keeps me going in my battles.

I actually understand where that japanese place is coming from...though it's annoying when it happens to you. I wouldn't take it personally. holidays gotta be one of their busiest times so they're looking for tables of 4-5 people. If you go and just order a normal meal that's keeping a family from getting a table. Business is business, I don't expect anybody to make a bad decision just because it benefits me.

Same as like a NYC steakhouse on father's day. They're gonna be pissed if you go by yourself and take a table to order yourself some wings and hang out for 2 hours.

One of our regular hangouts just made the banned list today. The restaurant is called Cow and Boy in Qixing Lu Nanning. We, a group of about seven foreigners, have been going for two or three months every Friday lunchtime. The service over the last few weeks has been getting steadily worse. Today we arrive at 11.45 and are the first people there. We sit for a while chatting and then ask for a menu, we get ignored. Try again and ignored, By now all  the tables downstairs are full and all the Chinese customers have ordered and are eating. We try one last time for a menu, waitress is too busy serving Chinese. We then get up to leave and tell the waitress exactly why we are leaving and not coming back. Why do Chinese places think it is fine too treat their regular customers like shit, I just don't get it, but they have lost our business.
