Q: Do you have to register with the police every month?

My work just informed me that  I have to register with the police every month. I can understand more security in the place I live- Xinjiang.  But how many terrorists come from Mexico? Maybe I am a spy or something more dangerous.

Maybe they just want to know that you are still in Xinjiang. And it's for your own safety, they will say. Maybe it's a good thing too. You can never be too sure.

Your 'Chinese dialects study' could be useful by many US 'outdoor' agencies, and your Mex. nationality could serve well as 'cover-(me)-up', my (s)-pie detector says.....

Seems excessive. But then again.... You should ask the local PSB office what a person with your visa is required to do.

And I cannot think of why Mexicans would be target of profiling... you guys can cook some mean chili, but that is one thing China doesn't fear. :)

Considering how bus drivers yell at people getting on with water bottles in their hands at an ambient temperature of 35 deg C., dude, you're quite lucky.

Heck no. I've only seen the police once when I first arrived. Actually I saw the leader the other day in the park while I was jogging. We exchanged hello's. But for me it's super simple. I only have to register with them when I leave the city for traveling and when I return. And to register I don't have to go see them, I just tell my business partner what time I'm leaving and what time I'll get back and he goes on their website and update them with the details. Quick 2 minutes and it's done. Thank god.

Most of the time you only need to register with the police once when you just arrive in China. But since you are in Xinjiang, that may be the case why you need to register every month.
