Q: do you hire a cleaning lady/person to help your wife/g/f?

I was talking to my brother in Canada ..whining about the dust in my home..... mentioned it to my wife, she got all uppity, she does keep the place clean..after work...( I don't work - retired and lazy) .....brother says, get off your ass and do it yourself .... I say what the hell for, I can hire a maid for $10.    really it is clean, but I do have an issue with the grease collecting range hood...... and the outside of the windows that I can't do without risking my life...... my issue here is...I'm betting that it is difficult to hire somebody that would go the extra mile, do the nooks and crannies .. the stuff we, me and wife. don't clean regularly......  think I can hire somebody? or have I stuck my foot in my mouth again and gotta do it myself until I am happy...............  sounds like I am useless ... but not ...  Just want to help the wife for the coming New Year and have a fresh and clean new home.......  without pissing her off, saying she doesn't do a good enough job.......

Get off you ass. Or hire an Ayi. If you whine about the dust in your place and you don't do anything then that is not very nice towards your wife.

Note. Dust can be handled also through prevention. Get rid of the "always open windows habit" Our 140sqrmtr apartment, can do a full cleaning of the floors in less than 15-20 mins, sure I am not lying on my knees scrubbing them, but I can get rid of the dust in no time. It is a matter of the right tools.

Or how about a robot vacuum cleaner. Sure it will not get everything, but having the major part of the dust removed every day, does do a lot, and the buildup in hard to reach places becomes a lot less.

And, you know those magnet things for cleaning a fishtank from algee. They exist in a bigger version that works for windows.

Paulberger:

i had a window cleaner like the fish tank algae thing.  one out of every five times i used it, it would fall off, and i would walk down 5 floors to get it... but, the 4 times it worked, it worked well.  just soak it in soapy water first.  also, dont leave it outside when you arent using it.

The one I've seen had a line between inner and outer part so you would not risk killing people on the street. (personally I don't care about the windows outside, so I don't own this thing myself)

Re Robot Vacuum Cleaners. I am not allowed to have one as my wife has me. iRobot Roomba is known to do a decent job back home, they are at the higher end of the price range.

i had the first generation roomba in america.  it was ok, not the greatest.  but this is when they first came out.  i have different levels in my home here... random one/two step things for no reason.. i would need to buy a robot vacuum cleaner for all the levels..

I did because my wife was pregnant, and I didn't want her to have to deal with inhaling the fumes in front of the stove. The nanny invited her grandson to live with us. Then she never, ever cleaned or cooked for anyone but herself and her grandson.

She would take our clothes out of the washing machine and put them in a bucket, or on the floor in the hallway. Her stuff came first, no matter what. She wouldn't clean them. She'd let trash continue to pile up. She'd force us to listen to her grandson screaming and crying, pounding on our door loudly, and raising ruckus. She wouldn't even watch him while he was going crazy.

She'd constantly disrespect me in my own house, and she called meetings together between the in-laws and my wife, and she'd would talk about how lazy I was. Even though I did all the shopping, worked my ass-off in a high-energy environment and walked to the stores whenever my wife needed anything.

She did this for around 4 months. Then, when I demanded my full salary at the school, she freaked out on me and told me I'm "emotionally unstable," after I never once talked back for 3 months. I told the school to kick her out of my apartment because I was tired of the constant disrespect. The school demanded that I let her continue to live with me, and told me I have "no right to make her leave because she's an elder, we must respect her." That's when I quit the job on the spot.

It's very difficult for me to hate someone... I can count the number of people that I hate on one hand. I hated her. Oh did I hate her. I wanted to throw her off the 8 story balcony ESJLGRSHAFLKX.

Be careful when hiring a nanny. If she doesn't do her job within a week, kick her ass to the curb. It's cheaper than the lawsuit/arrest/deportation when you get so fed up with her disrespect that you want to throw her off the balcony.

Paulberger:

i thought about getting a nanny, but i would never get one that had to live with us!  someone nearby that could walk to my house would be fine.  your ayi worked for your school?  i bet she knew someone or was related to someone working there and that's why they gave her the job and wouldn't fire her..

Just as a small motivational nugget.

This morning, before the sun got up, I was out with the dog, then cleaned the floor of our entire apartment, except the master bedroom + the toilet there. I then cooked breakfast, woke up the wife, cleaned up after breakfast. Before 9am.

My girl friend had to install cameras in her grandparents home to keep an eye on the ayi.  She was disrespecting the elderly folks and not doing her job.  Now all the uncles and aunts can watch the ayi on-line anytime they want.

Thanks for all the warnings here.  I don't think I will ever get a live in ayi, or one for more than a few hours a day.

No need to hire anyone, just move your mother in law in.

Of course, she will not be there to help your wife, it will be your wife's job to help her broken heart.

Best bit of all, you won't have to lift a finger in the house because MIL will declare your cleaning efforts as being sub-standard.
