I don't have any "students", but many people treat laowais specially,

I don't exactly "like it", but sometimes it is nice, if it seems kind and honest.

Btw. we are more then "disabled" then "stars" for many Wink

Rock star? I'm not sure what that means, but I know how the term is used. Perhaps it means special treatment. If so, my students fall far short in that department. I have good students, and students who couldn't care less about learning English. The latter rarely show up to class, and promptly fail at the end of the semester.

The former, however, come to class and are treated like young ladies and gentlemen, and are expected in return to treat me as their teacher; with respect and due diligence in their work and attitude. However, I am easier to get to know than their Chinese teachers, because I'm not inherently bound by the rigid social structure which dictates traditional authority/student relationships. This means I make them feel at ease and interact with them in the class room, setting an atmosphere in which they feel comfortable to facilitate conversation.

Some students probably do give their teachers the "rock star" treatment. For me, it would be an embarrassment and a waste of mine and their time. angel

I did in a way, when I first came here. It took me very much by surprise, signing autographs and being introduced as a professor and such and such. I had to look over my shoulder to see who they were talking about. Used to all that now and just laugh it off. It would be a little bit sad to take seriously something as simple as being born outside of the Chinese borders as a measure of yourself, but i'm sure plenty do.

So what Im still a Rock Star but no rock moves that I can do in public

seriously though

It is good in small doses but it can be easy to be overwhelmed if 54 kids ask you for your autograph

It gives you an insight to what a real celebrity goes' through and they can have itlaugh

Strangers may treat me like a Rock Star.

Students treat me like a sleeping pill.....

icnif77:

I have rule in my Classroom: if they come in with the books, I don't let them sleep. Sometimes, I use broom stick!

However, I promise them, I will let them sleep, if they bring in pillow instead of the books.

If I was making rock star money for teaching them i'd be cool with it. otherwise it just gets tiring and I ignore it.

that treatment was interesting in the beginning, And also when Im in rural areas I get it more and its not so annoying.

But after being here a while, that treatment tends to irk you, and just want to go about your day to day in a normal way. Nothing is worse than sitting down to relax and have some grub at a small restaurant and then someone barges over and will not stop talking/asking questions, or even sits down to eat at your table. They dont pick up on subtle hints.

.And I doubt real rock stars have random people saying to them "HI, Im Apple (or any other fruit name), I want to be friends with you!!
