Q: Do you know of any ridiculous Laws here in China?

Let me start by stating that I am not trying to make fun of China.  It is a well known fact that sometimes, many countries do carry on their books Laws that are totally amazing, stupid and ridiculous, including good old USA.
While reading some old existing Chinese Laws, I ran into one the other day that I though it served no good purpose, yet it is still an existing law and a valid one that could be enforced.  In a few words, and sharing it wi\th you all, this Law says that no women can be without clothes walking around inside a hotel room.    That's it !.  Three facts, one is a woman (thus men can do), second she can not be naked inside the privacy of her hotel room, and third walking inside her room without clothes on.

Now, who can see her and call the Police?.  Husband ?  Lover?  What would be the purpose of having this law on the books, to prevent what ?.  Why is still in the books and has not been eliminated ?.

Have you run into, or heard from someone else, about a similar ridiculous Law?.  A local Chinese lawyer friend told me that there is an old law that says only intelligent people can go to college here, have you heard that one.

And again, this is not happening only in China, but also in many countries abroad.  as an example, below are a few in existance now in USA :
In Los Angeles, It is not legal to bathe two babies at the same time in the same tub.

  • In Riverside, Kissing on the lips, unless both parties wipe their lips with carbonized rose water, is against the local health ordinance.
  • In Walnut, No person shall wear a mask or disguise on a public street without a permit from the sheriff. Source: 17-32 Mask or disguise--Wearing.
  • In Walnut, It shall be unlawful for any person to fly, above an altitude of ten feet above the ground, or near any electrical conductive public utility wires or facilities, any kite or balloon which has a body or any parts, tail, string or ribbon Source: 17-1 Kite flying restricted

well shifu ! the chinese rules over here are not completely clear to many foreigners. we foreigner know it from one another, self experience, chinese friends, interpretations and translations.
1st thing i have seen in the rules of visa things. i hate is they call every foreigner ALIENS, damned man which planet or universe i belong that you made me alien instead why not use foreigner.
other traffic rules are very stupid sometimes they does not make any sense. some are very funny as well
but the reality as far as i have seen it, i do not the complete rule and law about it as much you can easily know about your country, american law , british law. they are much clear and in simple straight forward words.....

Jnusb416:

The term "alien" is correct. It simply refers to people from outside the country.

Actually the word "alien" was used extensively in USA to designate "foreigners" back in the 60's and 70's. To me it is not offensive either, but I travel so much that maybe I am used to it by now.

Dammit, and I'd been trying so hard to adhere to the rules here in China! Turns out that literally the first two hours in was in the country I broke the law :(

Seriously, that law was probably the remnant of a set of ill conceived anti-prostitution laws, designed to stop: "oh, what, you mean those naked ladies? No, sir they just happen to be chilling out in my hotel room in this dodgy part of the city... nothing weird going on here, officer...'" type conversations.

HappyExPat:

Thanks, you gave me the first smile of today, don't you agree it is a stupid law and on top, hard to enforce ?.

Too many to name, just the one I stated in a different post is also quite funny. Some local governments require permission of birth. So you literaly have to go and get a little red book that says you have the right to make a BABY.

Cheque please I'm done here

Drivers of power-driven vehicles who stop at pedestrian crossings are liable to a fine of up to five yuan, or a warning.

I wonder if I could get the government job of just kicking in the hotel doors of women's rooms just to make sure she's not walking around naked.  For her safety of course.

Go ahead, and if you need help, let me know, I could be your assistant and take photos or video to be able to prove charges in Court later.  wink
