Overheard in the subway yesterday an Italian who was bragging to his friend that he got a tutoring stint with a 'rich kid'. Gets paid 400 RMB an hour by the family.
He kept going on about how he had his other Italian friends help him out with HIS English when he first came to China months ago, so that he could tutor.
Are Chinese really that clueless?

c'est pas mal du tout! En fait t'as bien la chance de trouver quoi que ce soit. Bon chance. In fact I would suggest to not give up on your native abilities for only interchange. If I were you I would do tutoring and why not find those Chinese ready to pay me 400/hour. Of course, I don't believe the Italian was telling the truth.
I have three students I help coach with their English, although I am not a qualified teacher, but this was explained to their parents at the beginning. It has surprised me, maybe it shouldn't, how many errors a re in the texts of their school books, and despite trying to tell them we do not use words in that way the answer is always well my teacher at school, Chinese teacher, says this is right, so I am obviously in the wrong. for instance the text says "be born" as opposed to was born. Still I am only an English laowai so what do I know?
Sofia632856728 if you are in Nanning contact me as this is exactly what I do.

Haha, that reminds me. One of my students likes to borrow books from the library, but every one I look at has mistakes, and quite a few of them. Sure, they are small mistakes, but I told her not to memorize it too closely, because all those small mistakes will make her English bad in the long run.

Yup, I have met young and old who will not correct the Chinglish they learned from a badly written Chinese English book because that's what it says in the awful book. Too bad for them.
I know some Pakistani's and Maldevians teaching English and charging 300 RNB per hour,
is this still surprising you guys??????????/ you are in china land of ignorance. they think any white person speaks english. also it is more about saying"i hired a foreigner to tutor my child for 400per hour" face
crimochina:
same here even if you offered me 1000 per hour if it was just a futile game of me trying to teach the kid and he/she not caring i would quit. did it before.
Unfortunately Chinese schools and parents have a very bad habit to employ foreigners who speak very poor English to teach in schools or tutor privately.
yeah..for sure there are so many non-natives speakers teach in English coz they work hard and get less paid!!!!
Lots of them around but the teaching game has become a game of white person, or the right passport, Ive seen lots of people without the right passport but speak English just as well as an American or English person, but the school doesn't even bother to find out,
Have you seen the job adverts on this site, experience not necessary but we need a headshot and a copy of your passport
So easy to find a good teacher, but the schools are too lazy to look for one so they give the parents what was advertised, a native looking teacher, only thinking about robbing the parents of their money
Reverse, I'm a white native speaking Canadian who doesn't teach or tutour English.
I know so many English teachers from Philippines and just one French teacher from india
Yes, yes and some more yes's!! I've met a guy from Tajikistan or whatever that place is called, several people from Peru, and a Russian girl all teaching English. Not only that but I've met people from the Phillipines and Nigeria teaching as well....
It's kind of funny because everytime you walk by them they look confused....
Why does that surprise you. Actually there are some benefits from learning from a non native:
- He has gone through process of learning language himself – know potential pitfalls & solutions, are living proof that learning language to high level is achievable
- Aware of learners’ cultural background & how this may affect their learning
- If spent time living in English-speaking country, were probably aware of & actually thought about (in contrast to natives) similarities & differences in language use between their native and the English-speaking culture

Anyone reading your comment can now see the problems with learning from a non-native speaker. You can't even spell your name properly (two h's in Chris).
Chhrischina:
such a pathetic loser...First: where did i mention that i was teaching english? Secondly: u sound quite afraid that some not'native english speaker could eventually steal the only job you probably are able to do ...is it so hard to go back to ur country and find a decent job?
buthurted you jackass?, hahahahhahah

0/10, you're not trolling anyone; you're just making yourself look stupid.
a) You've violated rule 1 of 4chan
b) Due to the above, your intent here is obvious
c) Attempting to troll people at a site full of older people is not impressing anyone
AS I've already commented above, I think the guy was only bragging. Should this be true, I relocate immediately to that place. I'm joking I love so much the dungeons here where I am living. It like an underworld. Fully inspiring my English classes.
Who taught you to write and speak in English Zeina8?
