Q: Do you know personally a foreigner who suffered a complete nervous breakdown in China?

I knew an Australian in Harbin who stark raving mad.  He was a heavy drinker with bipolar problems.  He totally came apart one eveninig in Harbin, destroyed part of his school, then went home and damaged the building where lived, punched a few locals on the way home.  He was caught and deported in two days.  Have you seen a foreigner have complete psychotic meltdown here?

I know this guy but not personally:

David S. Wills

DAVID WILLS is the managing editor of Beatdom Magazine, a literary journal inspired by the Beat Generation.

He has spent the past three years living in Asia, where he has worked as a travel writer, teacher and textbook editor. He lives with his girlfriend wife and rescues badly behaved cats. He is currently working on the proud author of a novel about ESL teachers in South Korea, called The Dog Farm.

You can learn more about him here.

Are you having one 981? Some of the posters seem to be getting to you. It happens... but after we do a blow up... we get back to normal. No love lost.

981, I have to ask you a question, and this seems to be as appropriate a place as any.
You seem to take pleasure in correcting spelling errors of other posters on this site, and yet we all have overlooked/forgiven your many errors in your posts. I'm just wondering what exactly qualifies you to be the spelling nazi when, in your own posts, you leave letters off of many of your words and leave out entire words needed to make your thought complete for your reader?
I suggest you allow some of the posters to get under your skin and your missing-words issue tends to become more pronounced. I would also like to point out that some of the words you seem to omit, tend to be words that wouldn't really have an equivalent in Mandarin.

Well, I know this one guy who went to a fun, funny website, and made 522 humourless, mostly useless, mostly bragging posts in 23 days, insisted that the site was his own personal shrine, and viciously attacked anyone who refused to praise him. Then wrote lengthy essay after lengthy essay, full of biggoted racist, sexist, classist language about how 80% of the regular posters were destroying his grand, wonderful vision for this site. This site he'd only started posting on 23 days prior.

And, judging from the post times, he's sacrified work, family, friends, eating and going to the bathroom in order to be logged onto this site - which he's been on for 23 days - a solid 16 hours a day.

During these 16 solid hours a day, for 23 days, he has composed an enemy list longer than Nixon could make in five years. He has accused his enemies of all being the same person, and has threatened them with - among other things - reprisal from the corporate sponsors of the site, calling the police, and "permanent deportation". On a website meant for a bit of fun.

That's probably the most clear-cut nervous breakdown I've ever seen.

No problem and thanks. I will pay for your stay in the Betty Ford Clinic but that would probably require an excessively long detox period.

Older Australian guy had been looking for an apartment for 5 months and was really stressed out. Then on the same day his wallet is stolen, he finds out his girlfriend was just trying to get money from him and the straw that broke the camel's back was when the boss asked to borrow his pen. He flipped out, broke an office chair and stormed out. Didn't see him for a week after that.

I once worked a bording school that hired about twenty foreigners. They were all quite social with each other and got along spendedly.

There was this one woman, a very kind, gentle woman who had lived in China for years and spoke Chinese very well. One day, she stopped socializing with all the foreigners. She was still friendly and all, but she always insisted she was too tired for card games, dinners, etc. After about a month of rarely seeing this woman who was once very active in our social lives, she announced she was going back home, and made some vague comments about how it was difficult to constantly try to deal with a different culture (funny thing is, she seemed to deal with it better than the rest of us, on account of her Chinese skills).

It was really sad. I wish we could have done something, but she really just closed herself off.
