Q: do you know who is running this country? China - do you care?
Last night I was out with 7 Chinese friends of my Chinese wife - 3 working men and 4 part time working women. I mentioned Hu Jintao being replaced. Not one of them knew, half didn't know of Hu Jintao........ nobody knows who replaced him except for me and my wife............. they just couldn't care less......... no time for news, like me...I got nothing but time.
Look, BHGAL, the average Chinese citizen is not going to sit down in a public place or at a gathering of people and discuss these kind of questions with you, particularly not with you as a foreigner. You surely must have knownthat.
OP, do you often start political debates over dinner? Are you serious?
Relax OP, they care, but they don't choose and maybe they won't discuss it with you. Hell, I wouldn't discuss politics with anyone who deliberately starts a political debate because they always seem to have a point or want their opinion to prevail and I just don't care what your opinion is, even if you agree with me.
I like your statistic: half of the seven people surveyed don't know of Hu Jintao. Maybe they lied to avoid discussing politics at dinner?

How is this a debate? How is it anything like that? He asked some people what they thought of Hu Jin Tao. This isn't the cultural revolution. I know plenty of Chinese people who would easily say what they thought of Jin tao. THere's nothing wrong with asking.

nevermind is right "what do you think of sb/sth?" is not the same as "do you like ..?" people who do know ho he is would probably say some nice things or neutral things
I completely agree with Bill8899 above. Starting political discussions over dinner here in China with newly-found Chinese associates and colleagues is hardly a recommended past-time at least IMHO.
