make lots of spelling mistakes because my typing is poor and I am spoiled by spellcheck when I write documents for work. As far as grammar goes it's over rated anyway IMHO.

Yeah sure I make mistakes, but, I go through and edit my posts as well! No more proof readers in the World, I suppose, they all passed away, or went home!. As GB said, I am not really sure what english is anymore, but, I do know formal english! I think, maybe, some, a little bit, 2 or three words, maybe my signature or just an X

Why we write sugar and we read it shugar, why we write tissue and we read it tishu one of my students asked me.

Alex66:

It is because you weren't taught proper phonics at school, also they did not teach you spelling and writing. They just put it all into a bag of socialist Chomsky idealism and hoped it would work

Nope! I neva make the errers!!

Seriously I'm with the ninja on this. It bugs me a bit too. I try to be careful and proof read but sometimes the typos can slip under the radar which annoys me. While some of the posts on this site are great examples of bad grammar and spelling they are also quite funny once you have deciphered them!! And let's allow for for style too. Sometimes that's the way people like to write - as if they are texting, shortened words and no punctuation.
There's this exercise called 'gobbledygook' and it shows that spelling and grammar can be discarded as long as the meaning is understood. I have included it below and I am sure many of you have seen it before.

Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in what order the ltteers in a word are, the only iprmoetnt thing is that the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can still raed it wouthit porbelm. This is bcuseae the human mind deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the word as a wlohe.

So there you have it!

That research may well have a point but it already assumes a knowledge of spelling. Show it to a Chinese student and watch their reaction!

The worst time is when you're bashing someone else for being stupid about something (usually for good reason) and you have a thousand typos or spelling/grammar errors. I instantly can't take the person seriously after that. It's like man you were doing so well up until you said "your stupid" instead of "you're stupid" .... now you look stupid Puzzled

Before you judge someone walk a mile in their shoes, that way you're a mile away and you have their shoes!
