Forgive the obscurity of the question, but I was in a taxi last night and the driver asked me out of the blue “how much would this car cost in your country?" to which I replied "sorry I don't know. I don't know much about cars." He then replied by saying "then what do you know about!"
Anyway, it's been a recurring question I've been asked during my tenure in China, along with "what cars do people drive in your country", "what country do you think makes the best cars" etc etc. I'm sure it's just curiosity, but I've noticed the topic of cars to play a pivotal role in many conversations I have with random locals here. Due to my sheer ignorance of the subject (I prefer hovercraft) I am often met with expressions of disappointment and confusion, as if I haven't met some sort of requirements in the knowledge of vehicles or whatever. Have you had similar experiences yourselves? I am aware of the car craze in modern China, especially given that every Chinese news site has a large section dedicated to automobile news, so I'm wondering if that's the reason.
It has never happened to me, but to help you with some handy replies to such questions
"This model was only produced until 1992"
"A car like this would never pass crashtest requirements"
"Germany"
"About the equivalent of 75000"
No it doesn't happen quite often.
The only question I get was about that European car the fancy looking one the mini cooper. Which I find highly attractive. Too expensive! The car comes from the 'UK' I believe and I prefer to get the 'red' color at the moment.
