As a white person teaching in China i don't really feel like a "minority" but I do often feel like people are trying to exploit me or maybe trying to cheat me. But since they cheat each other every day, it doesn't make me feel so "special" I suppose. But when the vendors at fruit and vegetable markets try to charge me more than local Chinese I get pissed.
welcome to China.
we are a minority to be exploited if possible, even more than other locals, because we are all 'rich'
expatlife26:
Its weird to me the dichotomy,
poor chinese seem to assume we're all rich and extravagant, and rich chinese tend to think we're poor and trashy.
Yeah, but like and Superior Minority
But as sorrel say, welcome to China.
After years, you will find the way how to cheat them. It will be your small revenge. and some occasional internet bashing and releasing steam of frustration will be part of your life
Take it easy, No one, again, no one, has the balls to avoid this in his first weeks or years here.
After time, when you know the prices, know the language, and know the way, you will be on the horseback ...
Good luck
Yes, and now that we know the tell tale signs etc we can ignore it and move on with real discussions. This is our forum!
DrMonkey:
It reminds of a Japanese cartoon that was popular in the early 80's in Europe : Grendizer (Goldorak in France). Grendizer is a gigantic robot piloted by a young dude and maintained by a small team of Good Guys. The Bad Guys (bad evil communist aliens of doom from Vega, no less) want to take over Earth. So each episode, the Bad Guys send *one* robot, which get his ass kicked by Grendizer. And never ever the Bad Guys change their strategy, they send only one robot with roughly the same strategy.
Goldorak go !

Edit: Just realized he posted 3 posts in a row again. I love how I told him that was too obvious last year, and he still makes new accounts and does the same thing.
Lol.... I get more freebies than the locals.
Tonight I took my daughter to a local food joint. A bowl of rice for her and a bottle of beer for me. They only charged 2RMB for the rice. I got my beer for free
