I speak English, my first language, mother tongue. I am also fluent in Mandarin, Malay, and Thai. Basic conversational Japanese as well. I also speak various Chinese dialects like Baihua, Chaozhou hua and Fujian hua.

It's easy to learn if you understand their culture and if you mix around with them on a daily basis. You may be laughed at when you say it incorrectly but they respect that you are trying to learn their language and will help you master it.

I only speak English.  Learnt a little French at school about a hundred years ago.

This afternoon I'll be spending my time with people who will start with Chinese before descending, like me, into Swahili.  Yes, you guessed correctly.....we're going for a long lunch at the local Peking Duck joint!

I speak English, French, some Spanish and intermediate Mandarin. I have studied into Korean, Japanese, Arabic, German and Tagalog.

The hardest to learn I find was Korean. I am not sure why... I think because it sounds overly whiny and gets on my nerves.

I am studying Chinese a lot more now because I decided to buy an apartment here, so I figured if I am investing money here may as well invest more time into the language.

After it, I would love to learn Arabic more. I like the way it sounds and would love to visit some of the countries.

I speak
* French : native language
* English : learned at school, and my everyday language for a few years now
* Vietnamese : learned as a hobby while at the university. Then I lived in Vietnam for a while. Fluent speech and comprehension, but can't really write.
* Mandarin : basics, can follow a simple conversation, bad speech, can't read/write

I tried but completely forgot/failed
* German : 2nd language at school, I just put zero effort into it
* Spanish : lived in Spain for a while as a kid, forgot all of it

I speak 6 languages, all European, one native, 2 of them closed to native, one average, 2 fluently. I would add Chinese and Japanese, no matter how bad, I would say beginner level. Still, I guess Chinese I know much more than Japanese.
