When I first came to China 4+ years ago, I was taking taxis everywhere. They were relatively inexpensive, fast, and readily available. However, over the past year or so, I feel that these benefits have disappeared (at least in Beijing). Fuel surcharges are going up (although not as bad as SH from what I hear), the traffic is horrendously slow and it's become impossible to find a cab during most hours when you'd want to. I'm not sure if I'm alone on this, but I've completely stopped using taxis over the last 6 months, instead relying on public transportation and my bike, and I'm actually quite happy about it. Anyone else out there have a similar experience? Or is your city's taxi situation still decent enough to rely on it?

Same... I used taxis a lot when I first got here, but the more I learn about where I am, the less I use them........... besides, I bought an electric bike and have the courage to use it now. Taxi only when the wife and I go out in the evenings, too far to walk, even then often the tuk-tuk to save a couple yuan.
I use taxi's next to never now. Bought a car a year and half ago. Life in China has been much more tolerable since then, and I drink less too
