Q: Do you talk to random people ?

I am going from introvert to extrovert over here. I love to stop random people (including foreigners) to talk with them. It looks weird and I rarely get rejections but It really changed my personality to a better person. How about you ? Does talking to people look too much hassle to you?

I prefer to talk to random objects. And animals.

Yeah, I do. I was extremely introverted before coming to China. Most people like to talk here. Although I don't normally approach random people, they approach me and talk to me. It's great.

I'm happy to talk to strangers, it's a chance to practise my Chinese, unfortunately the conversations tend to be excrutiatingly predictable. It's like there's a blueprint of small-talk that everyone's memorized and they just keep churning it out time after time. If one person were to ask me if i'd ever seen a ghost or a UFO or had a near death experience I think i'd kiss them.

NiceBrice:

I was about to write pretty much the same thing below.

I think its good (and free!) practice, although I really wish the conversations could be more in depth. Although my Chinese is still pretty crappy, so it probably doesn't matter.

I had a hard time answering questions asked by strangers. Everyone wants to know "哪个国家的?" (Where are you from?) They would ask me completely out of the blue, while i was figuring out why I had to answer the question, they would walk away assuming I didn't understand Chinese.

Sometimes when I shop for groceries, some people would come up & ask how I am going to cook squid or beef (which I often buy), some old ladies would come up & tell me which onions are bad & which vegetables are fresh. I would often answer their questions trying not to give too much personal info, but I shun hello boys & crazy mothers who push their kids to say hello to me.

Now that I think back, I was a lot more sociable in Beijing, as I would also talk to random people without fear, and get along well.

Now... it's back to the no-life stage.

You must be in Hunan, huh?

Nah, I moved back to France last summer.

Or is there a joke I'm missing? :/
