'Did you talk to CIA or they have been promiscous .....' asks F. Zappa
Then, Furtado Nelly sings 'Am I throwing you off? Nope!
... Promiscous girl, you're teasing me, you know what I need and I got what you want...and so (h)on...'
Do you fancy to see new Gold chart?
Yes, once they annex Nepal they will own the summit of Mount Everest.
Lord_hanson:
Not the summit though but don't worry the Chinese like to move the border markers a few metres every year so one day.
icnif77:
'Zhumulangma Feng' is the proper name in China. Learn some geography facts you all, pls.
Scandinavian:
Mount Everest is the tallest, not the highest mountain, isn't it ?
Hotwater:
@ Lord_Hanson.....I'm sure they'll blame the borders moving on continental shift!
Lord_hanson:
That wouldn't suprise me. I once saw a video on youtube of Chinese soldiers doing. Indian soldiers had to shoot at them to make them stop.
Shining_brow:
No Scandi - Everest is the highest, not the tallest.
Highest is basically 'uppermost point on the Earth from sea level', while tallest is 'from base to apex'. Everest's apex is 29,000 feet up. The mountain in Hawaii is about 33,000 feet from base to apex - but a large part of it is underwater.
diverdude1:
@shining&scandi.... wanna guess the largest (greatest mass) mountain on Earth? try to guess b4 internet search. extra points for knowing both of its common names and/or any other interesting factoids~
diverdude1:
maybe I should've checked before I opened my mouth,,, but many years ago when I was working there, there being Denali National Park, we were always told that Denali was the biggest mountain on the planet.
I still haven't checked online, but I think I remember it's height- 20,320'
anybody else know it's official name?
icnif77:

what an awesome place,,, reading those links sure brings back some good memories...
*ok,, I was in error.... summit listed as 20,310'
@scots - raise an interesting question... when do we call an island a mountain? like mentioned earlier the tallest mountain is one of those in Hawaii,,, but probably most people just call it an island... gran canary,, being an island of volcanic nature could also probably be called a mountain... ya,, I know Geologists have already addressed this issue long ago... :oCome on, Guys - at least Leo (sort of) acknowledges he's a Mainlander. Let's at least give him that - he's not being a wumao (well - hasn't shown it yet). He's asked questions, and stayed around (returned) for the answers...
Firstly - what do you mean by 'highest'? I presume you mean 'greatest', or 'most powerful'. But, even those adjectives leave a LOT of room for other perceptions.
The US has been the most powerful (economically) country in the world for a few decades - it still doesn't mean that I'd want to live there. Nor that the world kowtows to it in all things (although, admittedly, many governments do - idiots!) And, in fact, it has been seen as a bully in many regions. The same can be said of England, France, Spain, Portugal, the Dutch, Germany etc throughout history, at one point or another.
Do you mean - will China become as influential as some of those other nations have been?
Personally, I doubt it. Definitely not within this century, nor the next. And that's even after the CCP is long gone (and, yes, it will go... it cannot survive for too much longer, keeping it's people in ignorance. The CCP is one thing that holds China back).
It also has one drawback that other previous world leading countries didn't have - mindset/culture. The Chinese culture is quite different to the 'western' one, and to the African, South American, and even the rest of Asia (although, similar in some places). That means, assimilation is harder. The change from individualism to collectivism (not that it actually exists here) just won't happen - certainly not short term. Also, at the moment, China is seen as extremely hypocritical - it says one thing, but does the opposite. We see this very clearly. While that's happening, it pushes other countries away, and thus, its influence is weakened.
Leading on to - China refuses to play on the international stage of politics and relations. China needs to start playing with the rest of the world, and not against it! The perception of 'power' isn't the same... China thinks power = military might. It isn't!
And, of course, it's holding itself back by clinging to the past - past 'injustices', and the need for revenge. (couple that with the hypocrisy above, and you have a disaster).
China can become 'the highest'.. but it won't anytime soon (ie, not in your lifetime). Too much baggage it loves holding onto.
ambivalentmace:
simple math 9 percent of the land, 20 percent of the people, go hungry or be nice to other countries and get some food. buy their land, screw them on business and bully them and starve to death.
this is a long term problem you have to fix, no matter your culture, your education, your politics. a hard reality that is never going to disappear, japan has no land left for farming and imports all their food and has to be nice to everybody, they have no choice, china will have to face that reality soon, but they will belly ache and bitch about it all the time they relent to this eventual destiny.
Stiggs:
Some good points there Shining_brow and you're right, what does Leo mean by 'high'?
I would argue if you want to judge a country, the quality of life of the people living there would have to be the best way to measure it. It doesn't matter how big the economy of a country is or how much military muscle they have, if people aren't happy living there then something is wrong with the place. Who would want to live there?
http://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings_by_country.jsp
I don't know how reliable this chart is and how much weight you can put on it. You see these surveys all the time but they mostly all seem to say the same thing. It's interesting to note that the countries with the two biggest economies aren't in the top ten though.
If China wants to be at the top of the list, they need to pass about 45 other countries to get there. I really don't see that happening anytime soon.
Go ask some expert, like John Denver. Oh wait, he's dead. nevermind. go ask Bob Marley, argh dead too. Thats leaves the last of the greatest...Wille Nelson. He's still tickin, so Im sure he has a definitave answer. GL!
I once played a game of Victoria 2 where china did in fact end up in the top spot. Most of the time they never fully westernize and end the game way in the hole.
My beloved Austria Hungary did end up with HK and Hainan though!
Lord_hanson:
Gotta love Viki 2. I think I must be part Borg as I am obsessed with assimilation.
expatlife26:
Yeah that's a really fun game. So much going on. I played Civ II a LOT as a kid and Viki 2 just hits for me in the same ways that Civ II did for me as a boy. Love it.
The same company makes a middle ages game similar to that I thought looked really good. But with work and school no time for games anymore unfortunately.
Lord_hanson:
If you're talking about crusader kings 2 then I would highly recommend it. It does take a lot of your time though.
expatlife26:
You are right it was definitely crusader kings 2.
and yeah I bet that game is great. My friend back home played it with a game of thrones expansion pack which doesn't make me want to play it any less!
I had a chat with International school, where my office (if I get hired) will be on the elevation of 1800m (6k ft.).
My biggest concern is, will my pronunciation stay the same at such high....?
PIA all around China. For Non-s.
expatlife26:
Are you talking about the China Scam Watch compound you have to live at since SAFEA betrayed you? I know the Watch's HQ is pretty high up in the mountains.
But those guys are some real tough hombres, so I bet they can hack it!
icnif77:
You can check it on Yahoogle, like me.
There's a school shot on the 3rd pic, on the top of the hill. You'll need a telescope to see my office's chair.
expatlife26:
wow all joking aside that place is really beautiful. Best of luck getting there!
icnif77:
Thx! Air PM is over 200. I'm not sure, if that's even possible. It might be mistake.
Man, there's dirt here everywhere you look.
icnif77:
What's on my mind at the moment, you're all destined to get different tag-s, when I'll post from such elevation-high......
Native-English-Lowland-ers
Is that nice name in English? OK, here's link and more pics of your area:
Last one's got very hairy .....hands....he might be 'Allan Snack-bar-s' guy....can't breathe....
I hear their mountains in China keep on growing taller and taller... being lifted by shifting of the tectonic plates... so, there is a chance to be the 'most highest country'.
Yes the mostest venerable, auspicious, excellent, augmented, overhyped and surgically enhanced.
One day the factories will accidentally use hemp materials and churn out billowing baked smokestacks, and then China will REALLY be the most highest! And everyone will mellow down, solving all their petty problems!
...nah, I'm just blowing smoke. Only laid back people get a good high; if you're a Yangist, stay off the roads for the duration of the high. Do it for yourself.
