I was checking taobao and I couldnt help but compare the design with ebay. The graphic styles are very different.
The images, logos, icons and color scheme of several chinese sites would only be used for websites for kids in Europe or US.
Do you know why the chinese sites try to make things cute and colorful?

If you step away from your screen and look out you will see grown people with Hello Kitty crap, neon lights on EVERYTHING, kids with shoes that squeak. Everything in the part of the real world that is the Middle Kingdom is done without a plan, poor design and in bad taste, web designers are doing a pretty good job at making the virtual world just as crappy as the real world.
It's not just websites, it's everywhere. It's an Asian thing. In the West, it's the content that is more relevant. In Asia, it's the packaging and visuals. It's a lot more obvious in Japanese sites
What JustinF said plus the fact that Chinese designers hate white space. If it can be filled...fill it.

Yes, if it can be fill, fill it with ribbons, dolls, balloon and cute stuff animals; Like the first pages of the menu in a local Chinese restaurant that has picture of a cute little pig gazing at you and saying get ready to eat me up from the next pages.
