Q: Do you think the films of Wong Kar-wei are wasted on China?

Here's a Chinese director who has international acclaim, lauded at Cannes, has a unique personal style, makes beautiful movies ... and yet his films have no influence upon Chinese  culture.

If Chinese took after his movies, men would be these brooding macho dudes standing stoic in the rain while women would be reclining supinely upon a settee while holding a cigarette holder. People would dress much more dapper, or else Chinese would be dressing as though it's 1960's Hong Kong until now. Movies would have better cinematography and scenes would all take place in cramped HK hotel rooms.

"Grandmaster" was such a disappointment. I think Wang waited to long to make his "slo-mo kung-fu epic of impassive people staring at each other" movie. As such, I think Wang's movies are wasted on China. You?

Not wasted at all.

Perhaps the people in the circles in which you move do not appreciate him, but overall he is a very much discussed and very appreciated director.  As in all things, he needs to tread a very fine line.

Maybe one of the best directors of the past 50 years.  Anywhere.
