Everyone says that making guanxi through friendships and events is the best way to secure a job and I do agree. But I also think that these aren't mutually exclusive. What about websites like Linkedin? Almost everyone I know has an account and some people really spend a lot of time on there. I have an account too but barely use it, but do you think it could be worthwhile?

In Europe I think it is essential. In China, it certainly doesn't harm. It would depend on industry. For LinkedIn, if you do a profile do it well. I've been approached several times via LinkedIn, in a couple of cases for positions which I had not in my wildest dreams thought of, in the sense that it was completely outside of my domain.
There are also the thing about LinkedIn that you can find past employees of a company. If looking for a job at a specific company, it can be valuable to be able to track down another westerner that is not longer working there, to get some honest input on how the place is run
and then of course there are a lot of forums, even some for China-bashing

Thanks for the answer. I've also been approached by headhunters for some bizarre things but none of them really called out to me. I suppose there's no harm in at least creating a professional-looking profile and browsing the various job titles and companies out there.
i think it is great. for me, I answer some groups questions on work visa in China.since they are satisfied with my answer then they will find me to help them to process this work visa or company registration though.
Even these potential clients I have never answered or met with they, if their friends saw it, they will also recommend them to me . LOL
Good luck with LInkedin. it is really useful.
Best Regards

Yes, it is very useful.
Just make sure you have a very decent profile so other people would love to connect with you.
I do think it can be very useful. Even if it isn't very big among Chinese people it still is among expats. So one day when you head home you have it already set up with references and connections etc.
I ended up blocking it as nothing came through that was of interest to me . I do not have the patience to sift through the Bullshit to get the answers I need , But if it works for others great, it is not for me however
Depending on your job it can be very useful. In fact for some jobs, such as recruitment agents, HR, PR, sales, etc you must be on linkedIn. But since you're in China it'd be more useful to be on the Chinese social networks.
Don't know if it's useful or not, but I've been linkedin-ing a lot since I moved back to China. They have interesting job advertisements once in a while.
If anyone wants to expand their network, message me!
I forgot to say that it's very convenient to send invitations through their Android application, no more "how do you know this person?".
I regularly get invitations via Linkedin to connect with people I've met at some time over the past few years but, as I don't know much about much, I just delete them.
I figure if someone really wants to make contact with me, they'll send me an email.
That said, I will be returning home to Australia in a couple of years and at that time I'll have to get 'a real job'.
And that won't be a simple thing for a man in his mid-fifties.
Perhaps I should I be thinking more about this Linkedin thing...
Oh dear....real life creeping into my thought processes. Next thing I'll have to start thinking about consolidating my superannuation and making a new Will.
