Q: do you think this teaching gig in china gets boring?

ive met many people who have been teaching for a long time in china and thats all they have been doing, most of them dont save any money, they just spend it on boose or traveling and go from one contract to another year after year.

dont get me wrong theres nothing wrong with being a teacher but theres a big difference being a teacher in an international school or lets say a teacher in england

so my questions to my  fellow expats

does this get boring?

do you have any long term plans?

or are you simply happy with the low hours of teaching and good pay

No job is perfect - a job that's never boring is probably one that's inherently stressful.

I think you'll probably need to say what you have in mind by teaching. Lecturing at a university? Subject teaching? Being an 'oral' (lol) teacher at a university? Adults at a language mill? Primary school? High school? Language mill kids? IELTS prep? They all have different demands and different level of engagement and skill needed.

I used to be one of the despised English-teacher-abroad contingent - I had a degree and a CELTA (still do, I suppose) and found teaching engaged adults to be one of the most interesting things I've done. You get a huge amount of human interaction, there's always a challenge and even if the job doesn't change the people in front of you do. I've also taught kids... not my cup of tea, although I was okay with those say about 6-12. Teaching little kids... shoot me! Teaching teenagers.. pas the vodka.

I eventually left teaching because, although it was enjoyable and the pay was okay, it wasn't going anywhere, so to a degree you could say I was bored although I never felt bored in class.

I have retrained and now work in a MUCH more stressful job, with massive consequences if I make even one small mistake, with targets, KPIs, deadlines, clients and corporate double-think to contend with. And that's enjoyable too - I like a challenge. But there are days where I'd HAPPILY go back to having a 12 students and the present perfect as being my biggest concerns.

I sure do get bored with the gig. I'm waiting for things to get better back home then I'll be booking a ticket! Right now it's not so bad, but I have to agree that it does get boring....not only that but I feel that it gets tiring too!

No, it doesn't get boring. Making money too.

Eventually, I'll exit it back to Europe. South of EU (Funchal preferably), if doctors won't object.

If you do anything long enough it will become boring.

Some people are just never satisfied and don't know how to live with content.

Hell no - we essentially have a job with total autonomy.

A job which arms ourselves with a limitless amount of creativity to exercise, not many places give you that anymore.

The only way it'll get boring is if you're not progressing. Whether it be with your ideas, within your company/school or if the money stagnates to a point to which is not what you're after.

Hey Stan Smile For me I got out of it because I decided it wasn't my port of call. I did enjoy my time however and had plenty of opportunity to progress - I got offered managerial positions and of course there's the CELTA, the DETLA and so on, which will get you in top positions in top schools. There's also the chance to become and IELTS examiner.

Different people have different life styles. Some people may just want to live a simple life and  take a job with less pressure.I think there's nothing wrong with that.A friend once said, rational thoughts usually prevent people from enjoying life,i agree with his words absolutely.

stan118:

i dont think you quiet understand what i mean when i say teaching gig, this is aimed at expats working here as teachers, being a Chinese person teaching in china and being a foreigner teaching in china is a very different experience

Compared with teaching in west countries, salaries in China are still low,and as an expat, most people will leave the country at last, that’s one reason why you asked this question as you don’t think teaching here can be a long term job choice.Your description of making money and spending them all does apply to some foreign teachers here, but I think most of these people are just here for one year or two who just come to see the world or get new experience. Most people here should have saved a proportion of their earnings. As some guys mentioned before, though the salary is lower here than that in west countries, when it comes to savings, the difference are not that huge.In addition, your precondition that people feel boring just because they are teaching here is not right .Whatever we do,I am sure over 90 percent of us would feel boring to some extent if we do a job for long enough.Whether people will feel boring or not has more to do with our minds than the jobs themselves. As I mentioned above, some people may really like teaching, and some people may like the job because of less pressure and working hours. If so,teaching here can be not that boring.

People can also have long term plans, they could seek opportunities to be leaders or managers of the schools if they find good ones and plan to stay there for several years.Or they could set up schools or training centers by themselves. As China gets closer and closer with the rest world, there would be an even larger demand for foreign languages, including Russian,Japanese,Portuguese,Spanish,French, and etc.So there would be an even larger market than it is at present. Also as China develops, the natives’ salaries will be higher,so more and more people would afford the price of attending language schools.English teachers salaries would rise as well for those don’t set up their own business. As for the ones who don’t want to teach English for their whole rest life, they could learn Chinese during their time here while trying to apply for the other positions, such as editors, reporters, translators, positions in travel companies, sales manager in foreign trade companies or foreign companies which have business in China or Chinese companies that have business in foreign countries, and so on.

(PS:I want to say something not related with the question.Personally speaking,I think China would get better than it is now in the next ten years under the new government’s leadership. Most of China’s problems at present have existed for tens of years, some started since the country opened to the world in 1978,such as corruption, pollution. The lack of morality at peresent has much to do with the cultural revolution in 1960s and 1970s which destroyed the society’s traditional morality system passed down for thousands of years. Then the country opened up,it paid so much attention to economy while its morality system remained damaged, besides, most Chinese had no religions,it made the condition worse, that can explain many problems we see today in the country, including pollution and corruption to some extent.

We used to focus on economy and let all the other problems go,but they are given more and more attention by the Chinese people and they are highlights of the new government’s agenda. So,I think China is at its worst point at present. As a Chinese saying goes,物极必反,things will develop in the opposite direction when they become extreme. So,I am still positive with the future though the country faces numerous problems at present.

PPS:I don’t get wu mao for this post.)

stan118:

well i do agree that, the main focus of the country is economy and a lot of problems get pushed to the back of the line or  ignored to be honest you cant blame the population for that, look at hong kong such a tiny place with 7 million ppl and they manage just fine, and compare that to guangzhou so big and the transport network for buses is a mess and inconsistent  because of the other commuters lack consideration for each other and ofcrose people dont care about traffic laws

As with almost any job, yes it gets boring. At least for me.

Also I feel like teaching in China isn't a good long term career path if you aren't planning on staying in China forever. More times than not teaching in China means nothing back in most peoples home countries.

I've met quite a few people who lived/worked in China as teachers for 4-5 years then go back to their home country and they can't find many good jobs because people view it almost the same as simply not working for the last 5 years. To teach in many other countries you actually need a degree in teaching, having taught your native language in a country that will hire people without experience and soley based on skin color wont hold much weight in the teaching industry in other countries.

I think teaching is a good gig for people who love traveling and want to experience new things, its especially great for younger people haven't settled down yet and still want experience traveling and a more care free lifestyle.  As far as making teaching a long term career go China isn't going to help you much or at all in regards to working in other countries.

In summary it's a job that pays the bills and allows you to travel and live a more exiciting life. It's not a good long term career option though unless your longterm goals are staying in China.

I came to China the first time to experience living abroad for a while. I had been to 34 countries but never for more than a month at a time.

I was not supposed to return, I did not like teaching but, it was a means to an end.

I will freely admit that I am an economic refugee in that , when I went home I got a job but was laid off after four months. I knew where I could get another job easily until things improved for what I am qualified for (maritime stuff). However, I met a girl who is now my wife and the situation changed so I stayed a little longer doing a job I now hate.

I have the chance of possibly my dream job here (boats and stuff) and I am sincerely hoping to get it. It will keep the missus happy and I will get back to some fun stuff.

If that doesn't happen, I have to bite the bullet, go home and do a bunch of courses to get offshore. Something I didn't want to really have to do.

So, to answer the original question, yes I am massively bored of teaching English.

Yes it gets old, so I changed to subject teaching. I save piles of money and I always have something to talk about, like the chapter we're covering today!

I love teaching, did so for 5 years both English and German before moving on to HR starting my own company.

The money was good at 22-25k per month in tier 2 including private group tuition and altogether I only worked 18-20h per week (no mandatory office hours), had a lot of free time to work on other projects or hit the gym.

But on the long run it gets boring because teaching is getting nowhere, you will never be promoted to manager or director, the best you can become is head teacer or DOS which pays slightly more but also brings in heavy responsibilities.

At the end I see teaching as a mean to enter China and build connections to get more "professional" jobs or taste the market to become an entrepreneur.

mArtiAn:

I wish I saw it that way but I think I lack the entrepreneurial spirit. Been at it for ten years now, can't imagine what I'd do here if I wasn't teaching. Still enjoy it though, for the most part. Built my own practice over the last few years, so at least I don't have to dance for anyone. Used to hate the extracurricular activities that came with the job when I worked for training centres. Now it's my way or the highway. If students act up and are rude or overly disruptive I can tell them straight, respect the class or you're out on your arse. I have a number of other rhyming threats I use, but I think you get the picture.
