Q: Do you think there are differences between HongKongers and Mainlanders?

I'm a HongKonger who work in the Mainland. I see myself a Chinese ( just like them)

My colleagues in the Mainland think I am different from them though.

And my American friend said it was interesting to see me describing myself as "a Chinese" rather than "a HongKonger".

Some of the foreigners even think Hong Kong is separated from China.

I enjoy working in the Mainland because it is less stressful. People are nicer too. I feel more comfortable in the Mainland.

Honestly,It's the same to me,I used to have one colleague from HongKong and some friends from there as well.they are the same with us.

what's the real difference?I'd say, they are more polite than a lot of mainlanders and speak better English, but with pretty strong accent.LOL

once I had a problem to understand a Hongkonger's English,Not sure why he did speak English with me as I am a Chinese. But I was with My husband and mother in law at that time.我唔明白呀smiley

lilichristian:

The accents of Hongkongers are really hilarious!

I laugh so hard sometimes when I hear they speak Mandarin like they are speaking Cantonese!!! hahahahaha

Well, My mandarin is getting better though. Don't laugh at me :P

No, they aren't the same as you people. That is nonsense. Talk to a lot of Hong Kong residents..not just one or two. Read many comments from them about how they feel about ill-mannered and uncivilized mainlanders. I'm sure that YOUR eyes will be opened. I've been to Hong Kong many times and have dealt with Hong Kong residents in many different situations.

the language one cantonese one mandaring. Many cantonese can speak both mandarin and cantonese, however many chinese mainlanders only speak mandarin. My friend in the states spoke both Mandarin and Cantonese but his family was from Hong Kong.

I've never heard a Hong Konger say that. I now don't trust you.

lilichristian:

Most of the Hongkongers do not think they are Chinese though......

They just do not want to have any relationship with China. And some of the HongKongers dislike Mainlanders.

In my experience HK ren thing they fart cinnamon compared to Mainlanders. Here in Vancouver, they don't even mix with them, they even have their own area of the city and Mainlanders don't live there.

Hong Kongers have a superiority complex when interacting with Mainlanders. Generally, their social skills are more Westernised than that of the Mainlanders also. Mainland girls have the edge in exquisite beauty and style and that is the most important difference, eh?

lilichristian:

So, Mainland Chinese girls are more beautiful to you?

Thanks for telling us the fact. lol. Wait..........Can I object to it? :P

Guangdong people are different to the rest of mainland. With that said I would certainly say HK'ers are different.

Cleanliness would be the first thing I'd point out.

$1500 for each piece of rubbish thrown on the street in HK.

FREE for as much as you throw in the Mainland. lol.

One difference I see among Hong Kongers is that they're not as rude and have much better manners than mainlanders.

I would say there are a few big differences with a few exceptions of course.

HK is an orderly place where most people conduct themselves in a civilized manner, whereas mainland China is disorderly and many do not know about the standards of the world outside.

HK people have basic knowledge about the world and have largely let go of conventional wisdom in favor of reasonable approaches to problem solving.

Hk people have a sense of civil liberty and basic right and wrong regardless of who commits the act in question  "It does not matter if its a millionaire, politician, or a military cadre, or street vender.  The law applies to everyone."

HK people are efficient

Now some people in Mainland China have the same qualities, however these types of qualities are not encouraged in the mainland because of the CCP's leadership reinforces the status quote to control and keep a strict hierarchy in all aspects of the society.

Another thing I have noticed and possibly the most important.  HK people can take criticism!
