Given all the horrible issues with pollution, food safety, the fact that it seems almost anything can give you cancer...it seems like the current youth have it rough with regards to their health.... I know life expectancy in China has gone up in the past few years but surely all the urbanites who live in cities are susceptible to serious illnesses early in life? Sorry to bring the tone down on a Friday afternoon....

I remember recently reading a list of countries ranked by life expectancy and China was fairly low, somewhere in the middle. Ironically Hong Kong was like top 5 and I think Japan was #1. But yeah I'm sure all of that should technically lower the life expectancy but who knows if it will actually be taken into account.
Yes, I'm sure you're right. Especially in terms of cholesterol rich diets based around the amount of fatty meats eaten in China now. Food safety I don't think is such a big issue because the same dirty standards have existed for generations. Alcohol abuse could be a serious issue. The other thing that is likely to rise exponentially is deaths through accidents and poor safety standards. Little is being done to improve base safety standards of driving, building quality, health & safety in factories etc. That may have a devastating effect. Industrial related pollutants is the other big issue. The Chinese talk the talk in terms of environmental protection but there is still a lon, long way to go before they are walking the walk.
Cancer rate is up 80% over the last 3 decades, one million people suffer a premature death each year due to the lack of air quality. A record number of people are killed on the streets each day.
The people being born now, will breathe and eat all the pollutants while their bodies are still developing and therefore more impacted by environmental factors.
However. The official statistics could be based on made up numbers anyway, and I don't think they have an accurate headcount in this country anyways.
