Q: Do you use Chinese cold medicine?

You know, those magic tablets that nobody knows exactly what they are but they do seem to help...

I've come down with a cold and was just wondering whether everyone uses them?

I've had the 999 brand of stuff a few times, but I don't really like to bother with cold medicine unless it's bad man flu.  Bare in mind there's no cure for the common cold, they only help with the symptoms.  999 is a "respected" brand so you should be relatively safe and the taste is ok for Chinese medicine.

PS. It's obvious who you are when you keep asking two questions every day. I don't understand why you can't grasp this. You're the only person who is so regularly active in asking questions. It's like clockwork.

No. I just wait for my immune system to do its job. There's not cure for a cold, just ways to reduce symptoms.

I will eat easy to digest food, I will go to be bed earlier. If I've a headache too strong to let me sleep, I will use paracetamol, which I took with from back home. If my throat is sore, I will drink hot water mixed with lemon juice, ginger and sugar. : not a cure, but it's nice to sip and it makes the throat feels better and yay, C vitamin with low environmental footprint !

andy74rc:

Sore throath? Just take 2 half spoons of honey and squeeze half lemon on it. Immediate relief....

@Scan How about a double blind study on whether whiskey or rum is most efficient ? For the science, you know, delivering humankind from the pain and shit like that, ya know ?

No pills in my lifey! I use pills exceptionally, after dentists 'practice' in my mouth.

You can treat cold and high body temp. with 'sweating': dress up yourself in pajama or two, socks on, and lay in the bed under double covers. Drink hot tea, and stay in bed for one session (an hour or longer). You can also drink glass or bottle of wine. Wine will increase your body temp., so you'll sweat even more/faster.

Change your wet pajama, and return to bed. Your high body temp. will decrease, and cold symptoms will be gone.

It's important, you keep your head under the cover or wrapped in the towel, while sweating. You should drink a lot of hot or warm tea to replace exiting (sweating) body liquids.

Just have a sauna and keep your bedsheet dry and clean......

One should stay inside, while sweating. Exposer to cold air/weather, while returning home from sauna can worsen the fluangel. 'Sweating' is proven 'recipe'!

There is no known cure for the common cold. The Chinese medicine men don't even know what causes it. I'd be skeptical and just have a glass of water instead. Don't waste your money.

I have never bothered with cold or flu remedies, here or at home. If I take the flu, my other half is hopping to buy the China medicines, when she is always asked not too,.The west doesn't have a magic cure so I'm sure China doesn't either. As some have mentioned I prefer just to let it run the course. I would however take headache tables, but always the same brand.

there is a cure for the cold, sort of: REST. im astonished how few people, chinese doctors included, dont see the value of perscribing this medicine. it's simple. get a relative to make you some decent chicken soup, and sit on a comfy couch with a blanket and remote control. keep away from the fire cups, needles and dog's meat (yes, some ppl truly believe eating dog meat prevents you catching a cold).

Scandinavian:

I have a doctor friend back home. He ran a half marathon the other day with a cold, he said his time sucked, but the next day he was feeling better. I told him his normal time sucked, but I can only compare with the professionals as I have never run a 20Km in one go.

A normal healthy person needs not take any special precautions to cmbat a cold, it is scaremongers like Oprah Winfrey that wants you to think that drinking goats testicle juice will make all your minor sufferings go away. MAN UP

coineineagh:

that may be true for vitally healthy people, but there are a couple of extremely fragile people with bad immune systems here, and deaths from the common cold have been reported. i bet that simple rest might have saved those peopke, but i'm skeptical of the health benefits of running a marathon.

Only Levofloxin. It's an antibiotic for upper respiratory bacteria. It's cheap, 4 yuan for one box. Whenever I feel an upper respiratory cold coming on (last week), I'll start popping the levofloxin and go into hibernation for 2 days and it's gone. Rest is the best cure, but I don't have time to sleep as much as I would like to.

A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
