I know Skype works, I use it with one of my friends who is in Xi'an. We voice but it isn't always a stable or clear connection. He says it's because of his wifi connection.

I use Skype all the time to talk to family with voice calls, although it is true that the slow internet in China can make calls difficult sometimes.  I also use Skype chat messaging extensivley for business.
Just make sure you top up your minutes with your cc before you come to China if you want to use it call land lines (or get the monthly plan), as China blocks access to your Skpe account.  Of course is you have a VPN you should be fine.

I use Skype and Windows Live Messenger all the time.  The never constant internet here does drop you calls.  I also have a Vonage system.  It's pretty nice to have a US number that answers in China.  Makes it real easy for people back home to get in contact if they need me.

HugAPanda:

Ohhh I was wondering about vonage. Now I'll look into it :) Thanks

I have used Skype here a lot and had very few problems.  I had a direct number that people could call local in the states, but it was rarely used so it wasn't worth the cost.

But I have skype forward to my cell phone here if I am not online when they call and that works out great.

Of course, I also have MSN, QQ, Yahoo & G+ as backups for video calls should I need them.

China does not block access to your Skype account.  In China, tom.com which is the local Skype subsidiary, manages Skype account.  One can add credit through tom.com, purchase an "Unlimited World" subscription or any other form of Skype credit.  New Skype versions are available through tom.com as well.

Additionally, by using www.taobao.com, one can purchase Skype credit through countries like Korea, South Africa, etc., so that in the end, one can save nearly 50% off of the local Chinese price.

I have found Skype to be generally reliable.  Connections tend to be good.  Quality is better on my laptop than on my desktop.

As for QQ, it's great for China but the worldwide audience is still somewhat limited.  Perhaps that will change in time.

For my Chinese friends, I use QQ international both here an when i visit home. for my Non-Chinese freinds and family, i use MSN Instant messenger. Both have webcams and it is really nice having a face to screen-face chat with those on misses on the "other side of the world".
