Q: Do your families pressure you to come home?

My family is putting a lot of pressure on me to go back home and it's really affecting me- i'm job hunting and kind of debating leaving China but it's really hard to make this decision with the extra pressure. Has anyone else had this?

Yeah they do, have for years but it got a lot more intense after my parents visited and saw where I live, as well as Beijing and a couple of other places.

They didn't come right right out and say it but I knew what they were thinking... why would anyone choose to live here with the pollution, littering, people spitting everywhere etc ( I don't feel like I need to go into all the negatives, everyone here knows what they are) when I could live in a developed, clean, stable first world country.

Clearly you must be mad if you spend any prolonged period of time in China. My parents probably think I am at least a bit crazy as well.

I have similar thing at the moment.

Now (being pissed), I applied for the job in Austria and Italy (not too far from my 'pressure' home), while I'm waiting for the Invitation letter from Henan Uni.

Have WPermit already (waited for it almost 90 days), and ticket LON - Bj.

Yes, my mother keeps complaining about being lonely and having troubles. I actually sent her a large sum of money but some people are just no good with money.

She keeps asking if I am happy here and wants me to come home. I actually want to return home but not for a few more years at least.

China has ran its course and I know too much... I think it is best to not know too much about China honestly lol.

But the good thing is that when I finally do return home, it will be a much better experience and I appreciate a ton of little things I didn't before.

Since the idea of having kids came, my parents are not putting pressures, but they openly think China is not the best place to raise kids. They came two times, so it's not like they are completely ignorant of things here.

for those with ties in China I can understand the difficulties of trying to balance the needs of all around them, with the needs and plans of themselves.

i ask myself a few questions:

1) am i enjoying myself/happy?

2) am i working towards a specific goal by being in China?

3) am i willing to put up with the daily BS of constant minor issues that occur again and again?

while family recognize i am responsible for my own life and health, do my long term plans mean i will stay or go?

going to China was a difficult decision in so many ways for them, and they are just showing me they care

When I lived in the same country as my parents, I didn't really see them that often. I think actually while we've been in China, I talk way more with them, see them a little less, but certainly more communication.

I forget where you are from, but lets say US, if your folks are in Florida and you go to Alaska isn't that the same ?

Did you ever talk to the about why they want you to move back, certainly it is because they care, but it might be they don't fully understand what/why you are in China. Did they ever visit China? I know for my mum it helped her a lot in feeling better about her son being far away after she saw the place and the people I am with.

Talk to them, try to help them mitigate their concerns.

When my parents came to visit me, they were pleased I was living in a nice apartment and have good friends here. That made them feel a little better about my living here.

Never.

My family is sort if a well travelled family. My whole life my grandparents ( moms side) lived around the world. Africa, vietnam ect. And since i was 18 i have been travelling extensively. My mom has also travelled a fair bit so she understands " the bug".

It helps that i have two siblings who are more homebodies.

Since i was a toddler my mom has seemed to know that I was gonna screw off when i grew up. She always said I would be the one to leave. So when i decided to move she was prepared. Didnt cause a fuss. Just made me promise to visit.

She doesnt like China but her coming here didnt really freak her out about her son. China is alot of bad things but there definatly is a sense of security when you walk down the street and that was always her biggest worry before she came.

She has seen my quality of life here and has spent a fair amount of time with my circle of family and friends and she knows i am well looked after and she fully understands why I have no reason to come home.

She has wechat as does my siblings and father so we talk daily and skype weekly.

Its all a good system for now. Knock on wood.

I haven't received much in the way of pressure. My folks know that I'm basically happy and financially secure here so they wish me the best. I make sure to see them at least once a year and skype/email regularly. It's not like I'd be seeing them more than a few times a year anyway if I was living in America.

I have the same problem as you have. The pressure is getting worse every year. My failure was allow my family came to china and face all rude chinese, every where very dirty, etc. anyways, I'm  thinking of leaving china soon, I don't think I can't stand chinese more than one or two years. Sometimes every week I get pissed off three or four times.

I'm Irish so going abroad and staying there for years is quite normal and even encouraged in our culture. Notwithstanding all the sentimental songs about the green fields of home. Still, my mother has been making gentle suggestions about coming back and i guess my father will start to as well when (if) the Irish economy becomes healthy again.
