Look at some websites and find answers from reliable doctors that have a blog or something that let's you know how to take care of yourself so you don't have to visit the doctor. Ever read the book "Take Care of Yourself"? You could find tips to taking care of yourself on the internet so you don't have to visit anymore doctors in the future! cheeky

If you went to a typical Chinese clinic or hospital, that is the type of answer you will get.

If you want a western answer to the problem, you will need to track down either an expat hospital or, if you have the connections, a military hospital.  The doctors in the small clinics and overrun Chinese hospitals are often little better than personified wives tales.

Did you go to a "hospital" or a hospital? You get what you pay for.

3 years ago i went to the military hospital in Harbin. I was bluntly refused and told to leave. My wife told me what the doctors had said following a short meeting with 3 others.
"We can't treat him because if anything goes wrong, we don't want bad relations with Canada"
However, true to form they asked me to pay 400rmb cause the nurse wheeled me in on a wheelchair. I think you know my answer!!

The doctors here don't know paint, most have only a basic grasp of biology as well as medicine, the whole medical system here is based on curing the common illnesses like the common cold and the more common flu. They are taught to use what they call injections (iv drip) because for most common sicknesses they will work.
Antibiotics are over used in every hospital you can see the results in the gray colored teeth that are so prevalent in many people.
Even the blood tests they are only looking for common aliments and anything outside of the normal will get missed. If the normal is not there they the doctors will guess and tell you you have this or that which they really have no idea what this or that is or how to cure it.
I have had girl friends told that their veast infection is some sort of uncurable STD that they receicved  because they were having sex with a foreigner and that all foreigners have STD's.
I took her to Hong Kong and they said it was a veast infection and gave her the proper medicine and it went away.
I have found that the doctors really do not know anything about the body at all and most of the medicine is based on myth and superstition. There is no after school research being done by any of them they graduate after 4 years of reading books and are put in the hospitals and that is where it ends. You will be better off going to a TCM hospital because at least there the wrong medication won't kill you, it will only give you the shits.

Yes, indeed this is a hit-or-miss issue.  On this issue I will occur.  In the small provincial hospital where I live, the hospitals that are open to foreigners tend to be quite OK, depending upon which doctor one is allowed to see.  Some of the doctors are quite good -- others are less so.  I have my horror stories as I am sure do others.  On the other hand, my experience with TCM has been quite good, much better than expected.  I was given acupuncture as a last resort after something happened.  It worked quite well over a period of time and I was really surprised to see how it worked in general.

In this city where I live, the military hospitals cannot accept foreign patients.  In any case, the local branch of the No. 1 Hospital is quite new and relatively efficient and staffed with some English-speaking doctors.

While I certainly agree that many doctors here don't know shit about western medicine, I have met some who are quite ok!

AS other suggested above, the problem is the difference between western and TCM... and trying to combine the 2 at the moment isn't going too well - probably because one side likes to laugh at the other at what they consider ridiculous notions!

Cold fruits as a cause of a cough? Sure, why not? I can understand why! The point the 'doctor' was making wasn't the western idea of "why this now?", but "what's the long-term activitiy leading to an inclination to get a cough?"

Similarly, when you want treatment for your condition, you expect it to work NOW! Not 6 months from now. But, that treatment that takes 6 months will mean that you shouldn't have this problem in the future, while taking that medicine means it could be a life-long recurring problem.

Listen to the professional it's more likely that what he's saying is funny to you at the time but so true in the end. If I were to sit in front of two people and either listen to the doctor which is the professional or have to listen to some people who laugh at doctors and their advice I'll take choice number one the professional doctor any day of the week and on special occasions....well pretty much the doctor's advice. Do you concur with that answer PaulaMartina?
