Q: Does anybody in China use online banking?

I mean local people not expats.
I waited in line tonight 20 minutes because all but one machine were down.
Then the couple in front of me proceed to take out about 20,000rmb at 3000rmb at a time, then proceeded to deposit the same money onto another account.
Then repeated the whole process again.
I thought I was going to lose it, but in the end I couldn't stop laughing.  I waited 30 minutes for this one couple to finish with everyone else behind me wating too.
How hard could it be to log on, transfer some funds, and log off like the rest of the civilized world does it?
Has anyone else seen this happen?  Does anyone use online banking?

It has happened to me a few times.  I just stand there for as much as 45 minutes waiting for an ATM to be free.  Once when whomever was ahead of me finished, as I went to the machine a sign came up saying it was shutdown because it ran out of money.....
At least with Bank of China, this is a "bad" thing, because I do know that they encourage customers to go to ATM's instead of a teller to withdrawl or deposit amounts up to 5,000 Rmb.
And in regards to online banking, I do not even know if that is possible in China.  I have tried unsuccesfully tp have my utilities paid directly every month from my account, but so far I have not been lucky enough to make myself understood.

I actually thought Mattaya had hacked TheDude's account here.... such a silly question!

Of course they know about online banking... and Alipay, and Taobao, and all the rest. Some people just figure it's safer to do things in person, and feel the money actually in their hands... especially when things go wrong over the internet, and the fear of people hacking thier accounts.

Direct Debits, however, maybe a slightly different kettle of fish, remembering that back home, you need to fill out an authorisation request form to have it done.

OK to the first comment, be careful because thems fightin words. All I do in China is take out cash from my Canadian bank, so I know nothing about the system. I know they buy stuff online.

Hehehe... :D It's a little like back home - there are still those who won't trust the internet. And, given some of my experiences here, I have my doubts about online Chinese banking as well!

Yeah, but that drives me nuts at home too. It's like people are applying for a second mortgage at an ATM
