Q: Does anybody else enjoy flipping people off?

Lately I've been flipping a lot of people off, and I must say it feels great.  I'm just so fed up with this place.  If the women weren't so hot and easy, I would have lasted about a week here.  Now, as my four-year stay comes to a close, I have come to the conclusion that this place is 99% shit, 1% piss.

HAAALLLOOOOOOO!! -  Middle finger

Take of photo of me on the subway? - Middle finger

Glare at me when I'm out with my lady? - Bird

Loudly talk about laowai when I'm obviously within earshot? - You guessed it, bird

Flying out of Shanghai, taking one last look at China? -  Bird

Mate, you've got it bad.  Take it easy.  Life has its ups and downs for sure.

@royce: Any suggestions on how to take it easy?  I feel like my soul has been poisoned by this place.  How does one find peace of mind when he/she is constantly bombarded by swirling, whirling detritus?

Im sure it would get quite old rather quick if every time you go out with an Asian looking hot female at your side (that they would assume is Chinese) , and you heard in Chinese was "you traitor", "you whore", "you slut", etc. being spoken towards your woman. Yeah...that would grow quite old, nad would force me to seek greener pastures. Happy Travels Man, I dont blame you one iota.

bojackhorseman:

Thank you sir, you know where I'm coming from.  If I heard someone call my lady a whore, he'd end up in the hospital and I'd end up in jail.

They want you to get angry, if you get angry they win, do not get angry, silence is the best answer to hatred, do not say anything and watch them hating you.

Whatever I think of these diaosi, virgin boys gonna hate on me and my girlfriend. These guys are so low, below dirt, I don't even pay any attention.

I spend the night with my girlfriend, good time and good sex, tonight these guys will masturbate with their right hand while watching some Japanese AV.

Happily married Chinese guys don't hate on Foreigners dating Chinese girls, it's always the losers who can't get any girl and are frustrated to the bone.

Damn. I enjoyed flipping people off when they really deserved it (such as when you are crossing the street when it is your light, and some jackass in a shiny car comes careening to a stop one inch from you and starts blasting the horn. Bird)...but you really should have left China ages ago.

Come to Vietnam. The people don't suck, and they think that you are awesome when you tell stories of how idiotic nongs in the PRC are.

You need to get out of China man. Believe me, I know how you feel. Minor ignorant moronic behavior repeated over and over again can drive you insane and make you hate everybody. But the way you're reacting is not really healthy or justified. You're responding in an aggressive and confrontational way to behavior that is simply immature, childish, ignorant and slightly annoying. For example. group of young Chinese guys says "hallooo" and you flip them off. How does anybody watching this go down perceive the situation? Chinese guys greet foreigner, foreigner curses them out, foreigner is an abrasive douche. Yes, I know that hallowing is rude and condescending but it's only subtly singling you out while you're being overtly confrontational. Take the high road, show them that you are better than them and that you're not a peasant or a hooligan. Just ignore them, politely say hello or if you want to be fresh give them a "koneeecheewa" or say "niiiiii haoooo" in an equally annoying voice.

Same goes for the other behaviors you complain about. Someone takes a photo of you, just make a weird face, turn your back or glare. It's not overtly hostile and it's a reasonable reaction to the minor annoyance given. Someone talks about you when you're in earshot? Just tell them politely in a calm voice that they're being rude and you understand them. This shows that you are a classy and civilized person and the peasants will know right away that you are better than them. Cursing people out just makes you look abrasive and uncivilized UNLESS they are actively hostile and confrontational towards you - like drivers who almost hit you through their idiocy, sidewalk drivers, people making racist comments to your face or talking shit to your girl. In those cases, a hostile and confrontational reaction is more than justified.

It might ruin your satisfaction by knowing not a lot of people in China are familiar with the meaning of this gesture.

I think occasionally flipping people off here is fine . It's not like we're going up and punching them in the face . People's behavior to foreigners is still bad or worse because no one corrected them .  Mark my words one day they'll do something to the wrong person abroad and end up badly injured or dead . Flipping them off, laughing at the bad behavior or showing disgust at their constant spitting might wake them up a bit. Better than punching them which is what they deserve most of the time .

RachelDiD:

So true. Whenever I deal with Chinese tourists in my country, I have to wake them up by telling them off in their own language and informing them that, thanks to their behavior, Americans can now see that their country is a craphole filled with rude people. The last time, I did it to some nong in an outlet mall who snatched a bag that I was looking at RIGHT OUT OF MY HANDS, because she had the nong me-me-me attitude and she wanted to look at it right then. It is the only non-violent course of action that actually seems to get through to them.
