Q: Does anybody have any experience with on-line English teaching?

Either first hand experience or even anecdotal information would be appreciated.

I have a friend who did it part time while he worked in Thailand. The company was based in Korea and he'd basically have 30 minute sessions per student where the students were supposed to do homework but if they didn't do it they'd just "free talk" and practice oral english. He'd do it for a couple hours after work a few days a week. I think it paid something like 10-15 usd per hour but can't remember. I know another guy who taught in China for a bit and last I heard was sitting in mommy's house back in America doing the same thing.

I should add that I had an experience with a Chinese guy who wanted to start an online teaching company based in mainland China. The idea was to appeal to students in smaller towns that lacked access to foreign teachers. Basically we would teach them online most of the time and then every couple months go visit them and see them face to face, see their village etc. It sounded like a cool idea but the boss was a total dickwad who would keep holding meetings and taking us out to dinner and nightclubs but there was never any job. Lots of dinners though and a very bizarre night at a nightclub came out of it.  But there was no job.

That's a bit like a mate of mine, a Chinese fella.  He's long wanted to create a legal business so he can leave the drudgery of his day job and he's now very close to signing the deal.

He has two others with him who have forked out untold amounts to secure their government license.  He wanted me in with them but at every meeting we have I just laugh out loud and decline.

The thing is, it's not real, it's only in their heads.  They have no customers, no income, and no idea.

But they don't sweat this small detail.  All that interests them is their respective titles on their very lavish business cards.

Managing Director, General Manager, Chief Executive Officer...... Hahahaha!

ESL in the US paid $10 an hour when I did it in 2005. In person...

royceH:

Gee that sounds a poor rate.  In 2005 I was paying unskilled labourers $25/hr to install water tanks.

Think about that.  Water tanks v English.  Just gave me a giggle.
