If it's a tourist visa you're wanting, don't bother trying to do it in China. Fly to Hong Kong, or Thailand/Laos/Cambodia.

The two governments aren't on friendly terms just now and it's making things problematic. I'm in Hanoi and have been hearing cases of visas processed in China being refused on arrival. Of course, this could be the expat rumour mill working overdrive ...
