sometimes when using the google translate app i get a network error . why is that? the internet would work great but why google translate? does a chinese company make a competing app?
I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about, but it might have to do with using a VPN.
only translate.google.cn works here while only translate.google.com works on a VPN.
So, if, in the middle of using GT you turn on your VPN, the China site will no longer load and will give you a network error. Same goes for the non-china site. Sadly it took me months to figure that out.
Hope this helps!
"only translate.google.cn works here"
You are not 100% right.
Maybe google translate don't work on google.com site (now redirected to HK as far as I know), but on some other google sites - works fine (for example google.pl).
I use it everyday, with no VPN. And the same time works translate.google.cn (the same network, the same network settings).
Crimo, VPN works also on mobile devices, try it if You want. (My cheap Chinese phone - just bought - have VPN ready to use... even if it is not exactly legal in China).
Crimo, what app You use? I'm now looking for some app translator...
I havent had any trouble myself, and I use the "regular" google-translate.
I use QQ International and it has a translation application built in. It can do several languages although I think the accuracy suffers sometimes. I liked "babel fish" but MSN took it over. I hope someone posts a better one in answer to your question.
google translate foes a horrible job converting english into chinese grammar.
I have trouble with everything from Google. Sometimes it's blocked. So I go to Yahoo for a while. Then that gets blocked. Then I go back to Google and so on. I think they're trying to push people to use Baidu and other Chinese search engines.
baidu translate isnt that bad.. i have heard that they have an app... but i havent taken the time to search for it, but it wouldnt be that hard to find out. Just go to baidu and search "fanyi" then bookmark the page, or look for an app download.
I have the same problem.
It is because the Google translate app is web based and without wifi will need data coverage. The 2G network sucks here and many times it craps out on me.
I don't believe it is for any other reason. It usually works a few minutes later after I close it and re-open it.
crimochina:
attention everyone meant the phone app (iphone/ android)
dude i think you're wrong it is not just the data network. when google translate craps out phone or wifi, i go to the chrome browser and use bing translate. bing translate through the data network would work while i'm getting network errors on google translate app. i think this is by design. i recently discovered that baidu has released translation/ maps apps.
I used it often without issues. However lately it is being locked out, even on the computer notebook it shuts down. I go to Google HK it closes down also, but I press the return arrow and it open.
Yes. I also get the same error..and once it will come..it will be there for few hours..My suggestion..Go for Bing..more accurate Translation than Google..
I have trouble with, google translate, google earth, picasaweb lately ..the past month or so....... all used to work fine and now I can't even get to to google earth or picasaweb albums ............ google translate sometimes, off and on/hit and miss .......... I think it is China screwing with Google and it pisses me off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
google translate, time from time, is not work for 1 day for me, never know why, but ussualy, when really need it
i have had an example, where google translate completely reversed the meaning of what i was trying to say example "It is my fault" google translated to "it is your fault", cause a few problems...!
I use "youdao" now... better quality translate, available on the web and as a download.
Use a VPN if you never want to have problems with google related sites/apps. It's not entirely true that they are blocked in China (they do work sometimes) but it's very true that the Chinese government/internet providers do annoying things where sometimes the connection to google sites drops.
Google itself released a pretty lengthy statement about this. Saying that customers in China will complain that randomly google stites stop working. Google looked into it and it's not an issue on their end they insit it's the Chinese government tinkering with network connections to make it seem like it's a problem on googles end. Of course China denies this and denies knowing anything about it
In summary.... use a vpn and you'll never have connection issues with google services.
