"Face" is a commodity to Chinese people that they love to give, get and show off how much they have. To westrern people a "face" is useless, anoying, and sometimes down right frustrating. But, have you ever used “face” for your own personal amusement? What did you do?
Do you mean face like respect or being polite like giving someone face
Or is this a product I should be buying and where or are tou talking about facebook
I think he means sarcasm in away that your host is unaware of.
Taking the micky out of somebody that dosent understand western humour.
and yes on a bad China day Ive done it
No, I dont mess with that because it is such a big deal here.
No, because I don't like to be rude to people. And what you said is untrue, there are people around the world who care about face, just not everyone.
philbravery:
thanks I feel realy bad now but It was a bad China day and he was a real dickhead but I guess you are right (Dam it)
GuilinRaf:
I too have been a dick when in a bad mood. Just look at some of my posts!
Jnusb416:
Well, I'm sure we've all caused someone to lose face, intentional or otherwise. I just don't do it out of spite. I do have moments where I don't give a crap about face, and maybe I don't try so hard to help a person keep it...
GuilinRaf:
Unintentionally, yes I have on occasion and when I have realized that I have done my best to try to fix it. Dont know if I have been successful or not however...
Well, back when it was still called "name" it meant something, if something shallow and superficial and frivolous, but it's something to do mostly with hair cuts and accessories now I guess.
My school has a strict haircut/uniform policy, which means none of the students have or want face. Some guy tried to come in with some kind of stupid haircut and I said that in my country it was woman hair, which got a good laugh. The school gave him a buzzcut that evening. Which makes me ask: whatever happened to traditional chinese values?
I do that to waiters who take too long and provide poor service and do not look focused on there job it is funny as hell until you get your food so I do not take it too far.
Jnusb416:
Isn't that how most service is here? It kind of makes you sound like a jerk.
DaBen:
Haven't you even been told the advice "Don't f*ck with the people that handle your food" ?
Jíliú.hé:
i know that is why i said. it is funny as hell until you get your food so I do not take it too far. a bad waiteris a bad waiter
DaBen:
Tips? In China? No one works for tips here unless they have become to expect it because they work somewhere that only deals for foreign tourists.
Do I ever "use" it? No. I refuse to play games with people, either to get what I
want or to enable them to get what they want. I treat all people with the same
respect that I would like to be treated with.
If someone gives me a gift, I don't act like I can't accept it four or five times. I
receive the gift and say "thank you." If I give a gift, it is because I feel they should
have it, not because I want something later. Same thing with compliments.
If I pour someones drink at a table, it is always "ladies first," and then whoever
the eldest gentleman is present. Through out all my dealings, I maintain the
social standards that I adhered to according to how I was brought up.
Games are for children, not adults.
Well, I've done the "But I can't" line... in mimickery of their "But we can't".. does taht count?
I've certainly said "I can't do that, because it's unethical" or something similar.
And, I'm in the process of telling my current school why they can't pass all those useuless losers, because they're in an agreement with an Australian university, that actually has standards! (and, if they DO try that stunt, guess who's wiki-leaking it back to home??)
GuilinRaf:
Hang in there! Thats what we did in my previous university in Guilin. Student "X" never went to class so we failed him. School would say we had to "retest him" (which is funny since he never "tested" in the first place). If we refused, the school would just assing him another foreing teacher who would "retest" him. Since that teacher often assumed that it was a case of re-taking a failed exam, it was done. However, when we realized that this was the school tricking us into passing students who NEVER went to class, whenever we had a "retest" we woould ask the other teachers about the student. If it was a case of chronic absenteeism, then we would test him but he would fail. Sometimes I felt like I was working for a kindergarten...
Shining_brow:
Oh, I'm fine with it .. I'm on good terms (ie, direct email and phone) to the HoD in the Aussie Uni that oversees this stuff :D
Face is their major weakness. If I want to "win" I will totally screw with them based on face.
