Q: Does anyone fill out their taxes online while in China?

How do you file your taxes online without an employer identification number? If your employer doesn't have this number, do you just file your taxes by paper and mail them in? How long does it take for you to get your tax returns?

you talking about US taxes ?

Personally I don't have to file anything for my tax department as I have no income in my home country and any assets I have is handled automatically by big brother.

I file my Canadian taxes online .....  I have to use a Canada address, but it is not a problem..... except my sister sees pretty much everything I do in my life financially......I'm pretty sure she shakes her head in disbelief every tax season. This year though, I have vowed to not argue with them.......just pay and pay and pay.

good luck with that ...few beer and the email to revenue canada will be easy to write.

For US taxes, it is true that you can earn over $90,000 per year in a foreign country and not have to pay taxes to the IRS on that foreign income.  However, you must file and declare the foreign income.  At the same time you also file another tax form that allows you to deduct the foreign income from your taxable income.  If you do not declare the foreign income to the IRS each year, you can get hit with a big penalty.

ambivalentmace:

the penalty is only if the host country reports the income to the u.s., otherwise no one ever knows, especially the irs. many americans work in china and report nothing as long as they dont wire funds to the us from china, you could be a gigolo living with a rich chinese wife and making no income at all. life is good. whatever i make here is reported and taxes paid under my wife's name so i dont have to file any paperwork. screw the irs, having other passports helps also. my attitude changed greatly when i realized that if i make a lot of money abroad and pay taxes to america, because the money is not made in america, i cant put any of the funds into my ira retirement accounts, so now i keep my money in singapore.
